LECTURER (ONE POST)
In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy within the School of Health Systems and Public Health (SHSPH)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lecturing and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students;
- Supervising postgraduate students at master’s level;
- Collaborating with scientists working on vector aspects of mosquito-borne diseases, with a primary focus on malaria vectors;
- Preparing and submitting funding proposals;
- Representing the University of Pretoria Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control (UP ISMC) on malaria vector aspects at national and international symposia and congresses, and national bodies or committees;
- Managing the UP ISMC’s Insectaries and product testing enterprise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s in Zoology or relevant field;
- Minimum 2 accredited publications (ideally more, preferably in last 3 years and in ISI journals - some first author);
- Experience in the field of mosquito vector surveillance and habitat identification;
- Some malaria knowledge and understanding;
- Field work experience;
- Experience with obtaining and managing funding;
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Vector control techniques;
- Collecting of specimens;
- Knowledge of local vector species;
- Good computational skills (Office, Excel);
- Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
- Good communication skills (English language competencies: writing and verbal);
- Leadership capabilities;
- Detail oriented;
- Innovation and critical thinking skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- PhD in Entomology, Public Health, Epidemiology or relevant field;
- Experience or qualification in medical entomology;
- Experience in supervising postgraduate students;
- Some administrational and operational experience;
- Experience of working in / managing an insectary;
- Knowledge of ArcGIS and modelling;
- Experience working in an insectary;
- Experience in conducting WHO standard assays;
- At least 5 years’ research experience;
- At least 1 year’s teaching experience;
- Driver’s license.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
