CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Chemistry at Nelson Mandela University has a long history of excellence and leadership in teaching and research in the various fields of chemistry. We are looking for a scientist with outstanding research achievements in the chemistry of organometallic systems towards catalysis and computational chemistry. The candidate should be able to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across Nelson Mandela University campuses. The person will also be expected to create industry links and international partnerships in their area of research expertise.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  1. Facilitation of multimodal teaching and learning in general and inorganic chemistry as well as organometallic and computational chemistry at a specialization level.
  2. Supervision of post-graduate students in organometallic chemistry research.
  3. Development of research in organometallic chemistry towards catalysis.
  4. Development of national and international research networks and partnerships.
  5. Manage, conduct, publish and promote research.
  6. Involvement in academic engagement at the institutional, regional and national levels.
  7. Participate in public activities of the Faculty of Science and the Department of Chemistry.
  8. Perform administration duties normally associated with the academic position.
  9. Perform any other related duties as and when required.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  1. Expert knowledge of the theory and application of chemistry in particular organometallic and computational chemistry.
  2. Candidate must have knowledge and be engaged in organometallic research toward catalysis and have computational chemistry competence to engage in theoretical calculations.
  3. Ability to lecture general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and computational chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  4. Ability to contribute to the creation of knowledge through research and publication of chemistry research results in accredited national and international chemistry journals.
  5. Ability to supervise postgraduate students at both masters and doctoral levels.
  6. Ability to attract external financial research support.
  7. Effective management of personnel, and of teaching and research programmes.
  8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Requirements

  1. Relevant doctorate degree in chemistry with specialization in organometallic and computational chemistry (Postdoctoral experience with specialization in organometallic / computational Chemistry will be an advantage).
  2. A minimum of 3 years teaching at university level (Experience as a lecturer will be an advantage).
  3. Evidence of appreciable supervision of at least master's students.
  4. Good research outputs, specifically articles or book chapters published in DHET accredited journals, with a focus on organometallic and computational chemistry.
  5. Evidence of ability to attract research funding.
  6. Evidence of research collaborations will be an advantage.
  7. NRF rating will be an added advantage.
  8. Evidence of internal and external stakeholder engagements e.g. administration, leadership, and curriculum design will be an advantage.
