The AIID function is to improve safety and public confidence in the aviation transport through excellence in: Independent investigation of transport accidents and incidents and other safety occurrences, safety data recording, analysis and research, and fostering safety awareness, knowledge and action.

Overall, Purpose of the Job

• The role of an Aircraft Accidents and Serious Incidents Investigator (AASII) is multifaceted and encompasses more than just attending aviation accidents and incidents sites. AASIIs must demonstrate:
• Personnel management and leadership skills capable of leading a team of like-minded professionals within a collaborative environment.
• Analytical and written skills capable of producing a final published safety investigation report.
• Project management skills capable of achieving a defined outcome, with agreed resources and within a prescribed time period.
• Communication and stakeholder management skills capable of professionally representing the SACAA-AIID’s interests with a range of government and private sector organizations and the general public.
• An ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively and recognize/respect the work preferences and different views of others.
• An ability to apply industry knowledge and experience impartially.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation and supporting regulations.
• An ongoing commitment to self-development and the maintenance of industry awareness.
• As Investigator In-Charge (IIC), lead, manage, and participate in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and safety issues that have the greatest potential to influence safety outcomes.
• As Investigator IIC, lead and oversee all aspects of the planning and delivery of an investigation project plan, including resource and workload allocation, regular and clear communication with managers, team members, and key stakeholders, staying within the scope of the investigation and achieving outcomes within the prescribed period.
• As an investigation team member, work collaboratively with others to collect and evaluate evidence and provide high-quality analysis to consolidate investigation safety factors.
• As Investigator IIC, prepare timely, well-reasoned, and written robust investigation reports and correspondence.
• Effectively communicate the findings and safety issues flowing from investigative work and advocate for timely and appropriate safety action.
• Work with your Manager, team, and other internal stakeholders to respond to safety occurrences and other immediate/time-critical demands.
• Build and maintain productive relationships with industry bodies, Commonwealth and State agencies to deliver quality safety outcomes.
• Ensure all workplace risks within your area of control are captured, assessed, and appropriately controlled consistent with the AIID risk management framework.
• Work in accordance with prescribed AIID processes and procedures and adhere to legislative requirements, including the Civil Aviation Act of 2022.
• Contribute to a range of organizational responsibilities, including major investigation preparedness, Professional and Work, Health and Safety (WH&S) Committees, learning and development (peer coaching/mentoring or sharing knowledge/expertise).
• Exemplifying and promoting the culture, Code of Conduct, and SACAA-AIID principles/values.

Relationship Management

• Effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders throughout the investigation process. Continuously provide updates on investigation progress as per the agreed timelines.

• Qualification

Minimum

• Grade 12 / N3, NCV and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME), or Private Pilot License (PPL); Commercial Pilot License (CPL) or Engineering degree or Engineering Diploma.
• NQF Level 7 Qualification / Advanced Diploma / bachelor’s degree coupled or a Project Management qualification.
• Quality Officer or Safety Officer Training.

Ideal

• CPL or ATPL or AME license on aircraft above 5700kg.
• Specialty courses, e.g., Gas Turbine Engine Investigations, Safety Management Systems, and human factors.

Experience

• 5 Years - AME or Pilot or Qualified Engineer, or SACAA Inspectorate.
