Job description

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

To ensure the implementation and maintenance of a functional Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programme at the hospital level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

  1. Identify, mitigate and manage risks related to Infection Prevention and Control.
  2. Investigate, analyse and interpret clinical data and act upon findings.
  3. Ensure adherence to statutory bodies.
  4. Identify training needs in the hospital and provide input in the development of training material.
  5. Influence and equip hospital teams to understand and comply with IPC policies and principles.
  6. Provide support with patient safety and quality improvement initiatives in the absence of the Patient Safety Manager.
  7. Continuous professional development.

Required Education
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION: Nursing qualification (degree or diploma).
DESIRED EDUCATION: Formal IPC course / Post Graduate diploma in IPC.

Required Experience
ESSENTIAL MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 3-5 Years working in a hospital environment as a professional healthcare practitioner.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE: 1 – 2 years IPC related work, supervision of a small team.

Required Job Skills And Knowledge
  • Conducting a system analysis of healthcare-associated infections and instituting preventative measures.
  • Interpretation and application of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) definitions.
  • Auditing (e.g. compliance to hand hygiene and environmental cleaning audits).
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office).
  • IPC surveillance and risk identification.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Identification, investigation and management of outbreaks.
  • Understanding and application of relevant IPC principles.
  • Data analysis and interpretation.
  • Knowledge of relevant statutory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Knowledge and experience in quality improvement methodology.
