Head of Legal - International Mining Company - South Africa

Overview:

Responsibilities:

1. Legal Strategy and Compliance:
   • Develop and implement legal strategies aligned with the company's overall objectives.
   • Ensure compliance with relevant mining laws, environmental regulations, labour laws, and other legal requirements.
   • Monitor changes in legislation and advise management on potential impacts.
2. Contract Management:
   • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts related to mining operations, including joint ventures, supply agreements, and service contracts.
   • Provide legal guidance during contract negotiations and dispute resolution.
3. Risk Management:
   • Identify legal risks associated with mining activities and develop risk mitigation strategies.
   • Collaborate with other departments to assess and manage legal risks effectively.
4. Litigation and Dispute Resolution:
   • Manage legal disputes, including litigation, arbitration, and mediation.
   • Work closely with external legal counsel when necessary.
5. Corporate Governance:
   • Ensure compliance with corporate governance principles.
   • Advise the board of directors on legal matters.
6. Employee Relations:
   • Provide legal guidance on employment matters, including labour disputes, disciplinary actions, and employee contracts.
   • Collaborate with HR to ensure fair and legal employment practices.
7. Environmental and Health & Safety Compliance:
   • Advise on environmental regulations, health and safety standards, and community relations.
   • Assist in obtaining necessary permits and licenses.
8. Stakeholder Management:
   • Engage with government agencies, local communities, and other stakeholders.
   • Represent the company in legal matters externally.
9. Team Leadership:
   • Manage a team of legal professionals, including attorneys and paralegals.
   • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Qualifications:

• Law Degree: A bachelor's degree in law (LLB) or equivalent.
• Admission as an Attorney: Must be admitted as an attorney in South Africa.
• Mining Industry Experience: Extensive experience in the mining sector.
