Kearsney College is a leading independent boarding and day school for approximately 650 boys from Grades 8 to 12. The 125-acre estate is set in a country atmosphere on the edge of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, just outside Durban. Kearsney has an outstanding record of academic achievement in the IEB Matriculation Examinations and provides a dynamic sporting and cultural offering.

Head of Department – Physical Science

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree and PGCE or BEd (Physical Science);
  • Extensive experience teaching IEB Physical Science up to Grade 12;
  • Manage and oversee faculty members within the department, including hiring, training, and evaluating their performance;
  • Strategic vision for science education as well as the ability to lead initiatives and projects to improve the department;
  • Awareness of trends, syllabus reforms, the latest teaching methods, and assessment practices applicable to the effective running of a department;
  • Ability to innovate and skilfully integrate technology into the classroom to enhance the learning experience;
  • Ensure that departmental policies and procedures are being followed and maintain a high standard of academic excellence;
  • Promote STEM initiatives, competitions, and opportunities for pupils;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and engage effectively with parents, pupils, and colleagues;
  • Ability to run the support programme for physical science and manage tutors;
  • Excellent administrative, planning, and organisational skills;
  • Ability to manage the department’s budgets, resources, and facilities effectively;
  • IEB NSC examiner/sub-examiner experience would be an advantage;
  • Willingness to be fully involved in the life of the school, including the extensive co-curricular programme, pastoral care, and the boarding establishment;
  • A valid SACE registration.
