The International School of Cape Town (ISCT) is one of the oldest Cambridge schools in the country, offering the Cambridge curriculum from Nursery through to High School and A levels, since 1998. Head of Department: Geography

Start date: 10 July 2025

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Geography to lead our small Geography department. This is a geography leadership position responsible for overseeing strategic direction, curriculum development, and teaching standards. Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and manage the Geography department, ensuring high-quality teaching across the high school.
  2. Oversee curriculum development, aligning it with Cambridge International standards to foster inquiry-based learning.
  3. Teach Geography to Years 7–13, delivering engaging lessons and supporting top academic outcomes.
  4. Provide leadership and direction for the Geography Department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
  5. Develop and implement innovative teaching strategies to engage students in geographic exploration.
  6. Monitor and enhance teaching and learning practices, mentoring staff to ensure professional growth.
  7. Develop effective assessment strategies to track student progress and drive high performance.
  8. Collaborate with, plan, liaise, and reflect with the other members of the teaching team.
  9. Promote and encourage student involvement in geographic competitions and camps.
  10. Foster interdisciplinary learning by working closely with other departments.
  11. Liaise with school leadership, parents, and external stakeholders to enhance the department’s performance.
  12. Contribute to school-wide leadership, supporting the academic vision of the International School of Cape Town.

Requirements:

  1. A Bachelor's degree and PGCE or BEd with specialization in the subject to be taught.
  2. SACE registered.
  3. Experience teaching IGCSE, AS & A Level equivalent, with a track record of strong results.
  4. Proven leadership skills in managing Geography departments or teams, both large and small.
  5. Strong strategic vision for Geography education and department development.
  6. A passion for inquiry-based learning, education, and student success.
  7. Experience working in high-achieving academic or international settings.
  8. Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
