The Federated Employers Mutual Assurance Company (RF) Proprietary Limited (FEM) was established as a mutual insurer in 1936 and on the introduction of the Workmen’s Compensation Act 1941 was granted a license to continue to transact workmen’s compensation insurance for the building and construction industry. This insurance compensates employees or their dependents following an injury arising from occupational accidents and illness occasioned by industrial diseases. FEM’s operations are essentially confined to the insurance of employers against their liabilities under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 1993 (COIDA). FEM operates under license from the Minister of Employment and Labour and is also registered as a non-life insurer, with premium income in excess of R1 billion and total assets in excess of R10 billion.
FEM is looking to appoint a Head of Clinical Services reporting to the Chief Medical and Operations Officer. The successful candidate will provide decisive leadership, a supportive management style, the ability to motivate teams and simultaneously hold them accountable.
This role involves directing and managing medical management within claims operations, including medical assessments, claim payments, rehabilitation, reintegration, and return-to-work processes. The incumbent will analyse medical management trends and develop, review, and implement policies, procedures, and processes. Additionally, the position provides oversight and guidance for all complex claims escalated to the Head of Clinical Services. The successful candidate will be expected to establish positive working relationships with healthcare providers, stay updated with medical technology, innovation, and the latest clinical information, and provide strategic input into annual planning and budget development to support strategic operational and individual performance objectives.
