The role is accountable to the Grindrod Logistics Board and reports to the Managing Director of Maersk South Africa. This organizational structure exists within a joint venture between Grindrod Limited and Maersk in which Maersk holds a 51% equity stake and Grindrod 49% equity stake.
The Managing Director of Grindrod Logistics is a critical role that serves as an inspirational leader responsible for formulating and executing an integrated, long-term strategic vision and managing the day-to-day operations of the company. This role involves steering the organization through complex, strategic decisions that align with the broader corporate goals, thereby facilitating sustainable growth and competitive advantage. The right candidate must build and model a great company culture, and good working relationship with the Board of Directors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that aligns with the overall business objectives.
- Provide expert advice and make recommendations to the Board of Directors on strategic initiatives and investments.
Operational Oversight
- Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the company.
- Implement and monitor KPI’s to drive operational excellence and take corrective actions as necessary.
- Lead the adoption of appropriate technologies that optimize efficiency and productivity.
Business Development
- Evaluate and develop new market entry strategies to expand Grindrod Logistics footprint.
- Work closely with the Chief Financial Officer to determine capital allocation and investment strategies that fuel innovation and efficiencies.
- Present investment cases for Board approval, including ROI analysis and strategic fit.
- Drive and oversee financial performance to ensure Grindrod Logistics financial success.
- Implement cost effective measures and revenue-generating strategies.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to relevant regulations and compliance requirements in accordance with set minimum standards.
- Identify and mitigate risks.
Leadership
- Provide visionary leadership to the organization, inspiring a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Set clear goals and objectives, fostering a culture of accountability and empowerment among the team.
- Continuously develop your leadership style to stay at the forefront of leadership practice.
Stakeholder Management
- Foster and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners including regulatory bodies.
- Represent the organization in negotiations at industry events and with key strategic partners.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson, shaping industry trends and standards.
- Foster C-level relationships with key clients, suppliers and partners to advance strategic objectives.
- Represent the company with all relevant external stakeholders and proactively manage all stakeholder relationships.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Relevant tertiary qualification (postgraduate qualification advantageous).
- Minimum 10 years of senior management experience, preferably in a similar industry.
- Proven track record of successfully implementing strategic initiatives and managing large teams.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles.
- Proven ability to interact with senior management of various stakeholders including key government bodies.
- Proven ability to work as a change agent and challenge the status quo.
