The Corporate Relations Adviser – Government Relations supports Shell’s business success, creating and delivering optimal business value and distinguishing Shell from competitors in the view of governments. The successful candidate plays a critical role in anticipating, analyzing and supports Shell’s response to government policy.
Where you fit in?
This role sits in the Corporate Relations team, which is tasked with creating and protecting value, pursuing strategic ambitions and growing Shell’s reputation. The successful candidate will report to the Corporate Relations lead and directly supports SA issue owners in analyzing often highly complex business impact of potential policy developments and constructing plans/tactics to position Shell and influence regulatory and policy developments in the most effective way.
What’s the role?
The GR Adviser is accountable for supporting Shell’s business representation towards the SA Government and key stakeholders including supporting on advocacy strategies aimed at influencing the outcome of policies affecting Shell Group business value and reputation.
Responsibilities
- Ensure Shell has credibility and trust at working/expert level in government departments handling Shell business matters and has access and trust at levels up to the Deputy Director General level and above;
- Work closely with the Corporate relations team and the business to develop the business advocacy plans - setting out desired policy outcomes, Shell position, policy messaging and recommendations, stakeholder analysis.
- Working closely with the Corporate Relations team members to identify business threats and opportunities from the government / NOC sector and devise response strategies in conjunction with the Corporate Relations Team. Secure and maintain credible and tested information in order to anticipate/monitor policy changes.
- Facilitate and maintain an ongoing dialogue with a network of key contacts across stakeholders in SA, ensuring timely access, helping the CCh and Corporate Relations Lead in building trust and credibility, thus positioning Shell as the partner of choice relative to key players, including Think Tanks.
- Create enabling platforms to promote Shell’s vision on energy policy – including the Powering Progress Strategy.
- Provide insights into the annual strategic work plan developed by the Corporate Relations Lead with the business.
- Ensure personal compliance with applicable government transparency and ethical standards for Group lobbying activities, as well as with Shell standards (eg. CoC, G&H, SGBP).
- Also engages government at a provincial and local level to assist with NTR related to all owned and Non-operated assets.
- Advises Group policy and advocacy team of key changes in SA Energy and Climate change policies and investigates potential areas of alignment.
What we need from you?
- Strong influencing/motivating skills and ability to drive delivery through others, able to work.
- 8 years’ experience in a mix of business, government /diplomatic and GR / External Relations roles.
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree such as International Relations, Politics, Business Management and other relevant qualifications.
- Effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, at all levels.
- Strong personal and business integrity.
- Capacity to multi-task and manage complexity.
- Good communicator - verbal and written.
- Experience in Issues Management and Crisis Management.
- Good knowledge of governance and business control frameworks.
- A good understanding of or capacity to quickly grasp the business drivers and threats relevant to Industry and Shell's businesses.
- A good knowledge and understanding of public policy and Shell's business and technical capabilities as they relate to the energy industry generally.
