Job description

Founded in 1896 and set in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Michaelhouse is a leading Anglican Independent senior Boarding School for boys from Grade 8 to Grade 12. Michaelhouse is looking to employ an energetic professional with a thorough knowledge of and passion for teaching Geography from Grade 8 to 12. The Geography Department at Michaelhouse is dynamic, forward-thinking, and multidisciplinary. Our goal is to equip boys with a deep understanding of past and future social and environmental challenges. We encourage them to develop relevant, empathetic solutions that can make a meaningful impact on both people and the planet. We seek a candidate who is passionate about growing the subject, integrating fieldwork, and adopting a dynamic approach to presenting theory in a practical and engaging manner. Geography remains a popular and relevant subject throughout all grades, with our matrics enjoying a high degree of success in the IEB final examinations.

Commencement date: July 2025

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL:

  • Be a qualified and passionate Geography teacher.
  • Have suitable experience in teaching Geography from Grade 8 to 12.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of successful classroom teaching and learning experience in a technology-rich learning environment.
  • Be able to integrate Geography into transdisciplinary approaches to education.
  • Have GIS knowledge.
  • Be able to drive a curiosity and passion for learning the subject.
  • Show creativity and innovation in the classroom.
  • Be proficient in creating and moderating a variety of different types of assessments.
  • Have knowledge of and experience with the Grade 12 IEB assessment guidelines.
  • Have experience as an IEB Grade 12 marker.
  • Have a current SACE registration.
  • Support the Christian ethos of the school.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Teaching a range of Geography classes.
  • Involvement in a variety of co-curricular and pastoral duties in the school.
  • Prior experience coaching a high level of cricket, water polo, and/or basketball would be advantageous.

Accommodation will be provided on or near the Michaelhouse Estate to facilitate the successful fulfilment of duties and full involvement in the school programme.
