Job description

Ensures departments adhere to the safety requirements set out in standards and designs.

POSITION INFO: Basic Requirements:

  • Formal Tertiary education: N. Dip or Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Degree

Experience:

  • 2-5 Years in Design or Controls Capacity
  • Computer Literate
  • Languages: English – Read, write and speak (required); Afrikaans – Read, write and speak (optional)
  • Drivers Licence: Code 8 (required)

Job Objectives:

  • The functional safety technician is to ensure that the controls department adheres to the safety requirements set out in standards and designs documentation (risk assessment, safety matrix, safety function layout).
  • Drives functional safety aspects within the controls and commissioning department to ensure that Jendamark machines conform to CE requirements.
  • Set up & program safety and non-safety control systems to accommodate project requirements.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Know and understand machine functional safety concepts and principles encompassing mechanical, electrical, fluid power, and controls.
  • Know and understand applicable directives and standards.
  • Ensure that controls department adheres to safety requirements set out in standards.
  • Drive functional safety aspects within the controls and commissioning department.
  • Produce documents for the safety function layout for F.S. Engineer to assess and approve.
  • Produce validated documentation for F.S. Engineer to assess and approve.
  • Ensure commissioning department performs and documents functional safety validations as set out in the CE validation checklist.
  • 3rd party assessor interaction when required.
  • Set up & program control systems to accommodate project requirements.
  • Test & commission facilities to completion as specified in project scope of work.
  • Have involvement in project initiation with design to understand safety requirements.
  • Travel locally and internationally to assist with installation & commissioning of facilities on site.
  • Compile inspection and measuring reports after measuring components has been completed.
  • Provide supporting explanations if required to supporting departments.
  • Increase knowledge of functional safety concepts, standards, and directives.
  • Stay current and aware of different products and developments.
  • Foster supplier relations.
  • Liaise with customers, if necessary, regarding requirements & control systems.
  • Introduce functional safety training within the company and departments with the goal of up-skilling others.
  • Perform all tasks with efficiency, excellence, and finesse.
  • Mentor, instruct, and uplift designers and commissioning teams in functional safety aspects.
  • Be proactively involved with customers to ensure highly successful project outcomes.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Duties:

  • Functional safety concepts.
  • Self-learn relevant directives and standards.
  • Technical problem-solving skills.
  • Set up & program control systems.
  • Continuous learning and keeping abreast with constantly improving functional safety developments.
  • TÜV Functional Safety Technician certification is greatly beneficial.
  • Excellent technical problem-solving skills.
  • Up-skill controls and commissioning teams.
  • Ability to engage with customers regarding functional safety principles.
  • Siemens or any relevant safety programming certificate would be beneficial.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of all aspects required for functionally safe machinery.
  • Aspire to be certified as a TÜV Functional Safety Engineer.
  • Strategic thinking and foresight in problem-solving.

  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Understanding of team leadership and striving towards this.
  • Good people management, motivational, and leadership skills.
  • Good conflict resolution skills.
  • Provide an environment where designers feel enthused and want to perform and achieve personal growth.
  • Be a good role model and a leader that subordinates would be eager to work under.
