Forklift Operator

A Forklift Operator is a professional who is responsible for moving pallets around the warehouse. They do this by using a forklift to load, unload and transfer pallets from trucks and containers for storage purposes throughout a warehouse.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily Forklift Operation:

1. Safely operate forklifts to transport pallets within the facility, from receiving areas to storage locations and loading docks.
2. Load and unload pallets from delivery trucks and containers.
3. Ensure proper handling of fruit pallets to prevent damage and maintain quality.
4. Identify damages and report shortages or quality deficiencies to the supervisor team.
5. Assist in inventory tracking by scanning and recording pallet movements using warehouse management systems (WMS).

Quality Control & Compliance:

1. Ensure compliance with health, safety, and hygiene regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
2. Conduct and complete daily inspections and report any mechanical issues to the maintenance team.
3. Maintain high standards of housekeeping.
4. Ensure doors to the cold storage remain closed when not in use to maintain temperature integrity.

Team Collaboration:

1. Coordinate with warehouse staff, quality control teams, and drivers to ensure smooth and efficient workflow.
2. Assist with general warehouse duties as needed.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

1. Grade 12 diploma or equivalent required.
2. Relevant certifications (Forklift Certification).

Experience:

1. Minimum of 1-5 years of operating experience, preferably in a cold storage environment.
2. Experience in the fruit export industry is preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

1. Effective communication and teamwork skills.
2. Ability to operate warehouse management systems (WMS) or scanners.
3. Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
4. Ability to follow instructions accurately and in a timely manner.
5. Ability to read and understand dispatch and receiving documents, and safety guidelines.
6. Excellent hand-eye coordination and peripheral vision.
7. Efficient individual with excellent time management skills.

Working Conditions:

1. The role requires working in a cold storage environment.
2. Ability to perform manual labour and work with heavy equipment.
3. Some flexibility in working hours will be needed to accommodate the nature of the fruit industry.
