Field Officers – Behavioural Science for Pedagogic Change

Organization: J-PAL Africa

Location: South Africa (Queenstown, Mthatha, Butterworth, Idutywa)

Start Date (Earliest): 1 October 2024

Length of Commitment: Maximum 2 Months

ABOUT THE ROLE

The fieldwork team will conduct learner assessments and teacher interviews to collect data that will inform our understanding of teaching practice and learner performance in the Eastern Cape. The goal of the study is to evaluate an education program in collaboration with a local NGO partner. Field work is planned for October and November though the timeline may adjust.

Tasks in this role will include:

  1. Conducting data collection in each school allocated using Survey CTO and tablets;
  2. Administering the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) to Grade 2 learners;
  3. Administering the Early Grade Mathematics Assessment (EGMA) to Grade 2 learners;
  4. Conducting interviews with educators on their pedagogical practice;
  5. Conducting classroom workbook audits;
  6. All field officers will be responsible for scheduling their program for the day on arrival and communicating with schools ahead of time with support from the research team.

Minimum Requirements:

  • National Senior Certificate/NQF Level 4 Qualification or higher
  • Demonstrated potential to conduct interviews/research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in English and isiXhosa
  • No criminal record or adverse finding preventing working with minors

Advantageous:

  • Familiarity with Ethics in Research
  • Prior experience in collecting data in schools
  • Prior experience in conducting assessments with primary school learners (preferably EGRA and EGMA)
  • Valid driver’s license and regular driving experience
  • Prior experience in using Survey CTO
  • A post-Matric qualification in education and/or social sciences
