OVERALL PURPOSE & OBJECTIVE OF THIS POSITION
In broad terms, the Environmental Manager will be required to coordinate the management of environmental performance.
Key Functions:
- Maintain a stringent environmental performance management reporting program to accurately and timeously provide data to all relevant agencies and interested parties.
- This includes DEAT, DACEL, Ekurhuleni, DWAF, and shareholders' reporting requirements, in addition to developing programs to track trends in areas such as water usage and air emissions performance.
- Provide primary environmental technical services and advice on Schedule G (a currently ongoing settlement case) and liaise and coordinate communications amongst the relevant personnel and institutions.
- Liaise with and provide environmental data and information to the General Manager as well as the Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and Commercial teams to ensure that non-compliance issues are addressed timeously.
- Guide the different teams on all aspects of environmental compliance and performance.
- Participate and/or lead a variety of environmental upgrade projects and contribute to the overall improvement of the station's environmental performance.
NORMAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Noise, Gasses / fumes, High Voltage, Heat, Working at Heights, Excessive Dust, Humidity or Damp.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good general health, capable of accessing all parts of the plant.
QUALIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Post Graduate Degree in the environmental field (MSc in Environmental Sciences, MSc Environmental Engineering, etc).
- 4-6 years of experience in an industrial environment focusing on environmental issues.
- Extensive knowledge and background of environmental principles and legislation.
- General knowledge and understanding of power plant processes and associated plant machinery and equipment.
- Ability to analyze data and determine trends.
- PC Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook.
FUNDAMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Able to multi-task, manage and control multiple projects.
- Must be committed and self-motivated and capable of interfacing with multiple teams in a service-based environment.
- Able to work without supervision.
- Must constantly demonstrate a "whatever it takes" attitude.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Minimum of four to six years relevant senior experience in an environmental field.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Demonstrated experience in report writing.
- Experience in interpreting and presenting analytical data and analyzing trends.
CORE FUNCTIONS:
- Act as custodian of environmental performance, ensuring compliance, implementing and developing ongoing improvements, and maintaining a superior standard of environmental performance.
- This includes the continuous implementation of environmental policy and procedures to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
- Ensure that all necessary monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and data are accurately and timeously submitted to comply with internal reporting requirements and external permit requirements.
- Maintain a program to track water use, emission limits, and other relevant environmental parameters to better establish trends and understand environmental performance of the plant.
- Ensure that environmental monitoring equipment is in good working order and implement and maintain a calibration program for relevant equipment.
- Assume an active role in consultant/contractor tender review, selection, coordination, and management regarding environmental issues.
- Track environmental legislation development that may affect the company and timeously advise thereon.
- Respond to any environmental complaints, including noise and dust, and maintain the Complaints Register.
- Liaise with relevant environmental departments and agencies to ensure a positive working relationship, resolution of potential issues, and provide information as and when requested.
- Ensure that environmental incidents are reported, remedied, and preventative action taken within 48 hours of an event.
- Carry out gap analysis and interim continuous improvement audits to comply with relevant legislation.
- Ensure coordination, liaison, and communication with the Technical Services, Commercial, and Operations Managers to provide a seamless and professional service to all stakeholders.
- Actively participate in the preparation, construction, implementation, and reporting of the Annual Operating Plan.
- Manage the budget of the environmental strategy.
- Advise the training Department about the kind of environmental training required by staff.
