Job Description

Our client, South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA), has a permanent opportunity available for an Entomologist based in Mount Edgecombe, North Coast, KwaZulu-Natal.

At SASRI, we are at the forefront of sustainable agricultural and biological research, focusing on the enhancement of sugarcane production, development, and innovation. Our mission is to advance food security, environmental stewardship, and knowledge sharing within the sugar industry and beyond.

Effective management of current and emerging sugarcane pests is central to the sustainability of the SA Sugar Industry. In recognition of this, SASRI conducts research and development on behalf of sugarcane farmers and millers to provide innovative area-wide Integrated Pest Management approaches. In many instances, the responsible and targeted use of chemical agents is necessary within these integrated approaches.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Propose, refine, and drive research into Integrated Pest Management approaches for sugarcane.
  • Report research findings at conferences and publish in scientific journals and the popular press.
  • Contribute entomological expertise in support of SASRI operations and services, including (a) approved research projects; (b) sugarcane screening trials for pest resistance; and (c) commercial studies commissioned and funded by external third parties on pest control compounds or agents deemed by SASRI to have potential value to sugarcane growers.
  • Communicate with and provide support and training to the SASRI Biosecurity Inspectorate and to sugarcane farmers through the SASRI Extension Service.

Education and Experience:

  • A minimum of an MSc in Entomology or closely allied discipline, with expertise in crop protection.
  • A PhD with research experience will be an advantage.
  • Five years’ experience in field and laboratory research connected with Entomology.
  • Experience in research collaboration in the development and implementation of Integrated Pest Management tactics including the use of insecticides.
  • Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP); and
  • AVCASA accreditation will be an advantage.
