Engineering Manager – Red Sands BESS Projects – Groblershoop, Northern Cape
We are recruiting an experienced Engineering Manager to join the Red Sands - BESS Project close to Groblershoop. This 153MW/712MWh battery energy project includes the construction of a new Eskom Main Transformer Station, overhead lines and a Switching Station.
The Engineering Manager will lead the Employer’s technical team to monitor, witness and enforce the construction contractor’s contractual obligations. The Engineering Manager will have a team of persons to assist, including access to specialist engineers to ensure the project is successfully delivered safely, on-time and in accordance with the contractual obligations.

Education Requirements
- Minimum BS/MS engineering degree or substantial equivalent technical training and prior extensive experience in project and site management
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in power construction site management within developing markets
- Proven ability to verify the completion of all Health & Safety (H&S) and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) plans before project handover
- Experience as a lead commercial/technical manager for the Owner, with a track record of delivering projects on time and within budget
- Ability to ensure warranty conditions are met and properly documented
- Expertise in integrating all control systems, including grid interfaces such as Digital, Control, and SCADA
- Extensive knowledge of high-voltage (HV) power infrastructure, preferably for Eskom, with strong experience in grid stakeholder and interface management
- Experience working with battery energy technology and integrating new technology into the grid
- Familiarity with project financing documents
- Broad knowledge of civil, electrical, and mechanical construction methods
- Direct experience managing EPC Contractors, subcontractors, and Owner’s construction teams
- Strong background in project budgeting and drawdown processes
- In-depth understanding of EPC contract terms and risk allocation
- Proficiency in project scheduling software such as Microsoft Project
- Ability to work internationally and collaborate with diverse teams
- Strong skills in defect tracking and resolution, including maintaining an updated defect list, cost assignments, and ensuring all defects are resolved and documented, as well as overseeing root cause analysis for major issues
- Capability to manage all communications and notifications with the grid operator, ensuring compliance with obligations and notice periods
- Ability to oversee and ensure all testing and commissioning activities are properly witnessed
Skills
- Fluent in English (speaking & writing), preference in Afrikaans
- Confident in commercial, financial, legal, technical, negotiation and project management skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Able to Negotiate
