Job description
Engineering Manager: ENGIE Kathu Operations (Internal/External)

Main Responsibilities include:

  • The duties of the Engineering Manager include planning, designing, sustainability, resource allocation, overseeing projects, budgeting and product development linked with economic and financial outcomes;
  • Oversee execution in terms of technology deployment;
  • Responsible for the engineering department and supervise the engineers;
  • Responsible for facility audits (insurance, legal & Legislations);
  • Responsible for legal, legislative, statutory & regulations;
  • Strategies and manage projects at every stage, ensuring that the projects are completed efficiently, correctly and on schedule;
  • While the strategic and operational responsibilities of the engineering manager are consistent across the plant, the role will vary across engineering specialisations (Mechanical, Control & Instrumentation, Electrical and Chemical);
  • Ensure all activities carried out in the plant are executed according to Company’s SHEQ procedures, standards and specifications;
  • Lead, supervise and coordinate the activities of all Maintenance personnel on shift;
  • Maximise the performance of the plant;
  • Propose the best operational strategy for all sorts of starts, shut downs and cloudy days;
  • Make justifications for new CAPEX;
  • Start and lead Management of Change (MOC) process;
  • Analyse and reduce Auxiliary Electricity Consumption of the Plant;
  • Recommend to the Operation Manager changes in methods, schedules and procedures needed to meet specific requirements of the plant operations;
  • Advise the Plant Manager about all kinds of technical information of systems and equipment;
  • Advise the HSE Manager about systems, hazards identification and controls;
  • Keep updated technical information related to the Plant;
  • Run an information system based on KPI’s;
  • Establish and ensure maintenance of effective monitoring and reporting systems;
  • Provide inputs to the preparation of plant operating budget and cost control systems;
  • Provide inputs to Root Cause Analysis;
  • Debug the SCADA system and keep it updated;
  • Ensure all IT and Communication systems run in a reliable manner;
  • Participation to ensure that operation of the Plant is performed in respect of O&M Agreement requirements;
  • Partake in plant commissioning activities;
  • Enforce HSE and Quality policies and procedures, and ensure that all HSE measures and precautions are strictly considered and taken care of during the execution of Maintenance activities to avoid any activity which might lead to Health Safety and Environment incidents / non-conformities;
  • Manage subordinates and contractors, directly guide, supervise and assume responsibility for the performance of the Maintenance personnel reporting to the role;
  • Supervise workshop activities and be the focal point of Maintenance Contractors for Maintenance work execution;
  • Supervise and coordinate day-to-day Maintenance activities as well as trouble-shooting activities thus being able to immediately determine failure causes and rectify defects found or manage emergency repairs;
  • Manage and coordinate preparation of Maintenance activities with Planner, ensure materials required for job performance are available in quantity and quality, ensure Maintenance plans are carried out in due time and that tasks performed are properly recorded in SAP/Maximo-PM;
  • Perform frequent on-site inspections to ensure proper work execution and check on direct hired and contracted technicians activities;
  • Participate in Plant performance and availability improvement or Operations and Maintenance cost reduction plans;
  • Assist in preparing Maintenance budget, work cost estimates, purchase orders and contracts for Maintenance activities in coordination with management and personnel in charge;
  • Monitor Maintenance activities cost, and take necessary corrective actions to ensure compliance with approved plans and budgets;
  • Ensure Contractors have all needed resources and tools to conduct Maintenance activities effectively and according to the contract terms and conditions;
  • Evaluate pertinent reports related to cost and progress of Maintenance activities and transmit analysis to the Plant Manager, issue reports as required for Maintenance Department;
  • Recommend new Maintenance plans, procedures and schedules for equipment;
  • Review equipment spare parts lists and recommend parts inventory and stock levels;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Plant Manager;
Qualifications:

  • BEng, BSC or Btech in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering;
  • Postgraduate qualification in management;
  • GCC Certificate (Mechanical or Electrical);
  • Driver’s License;
  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a professional Engineer is advantageous;
  • PPA experience will be advantageous;
Experience:

  • 8 - 10 years of experience in a Power Plant, Oil & Gas, Petrochemical or in the Chemical Industry;
  • Experience in leading and managing people;
Skills:

  • Must have a high degree of skill in Business Computing Applications such as Databases, Word processors, Spreadsheets, PowerPoint and Maximo or equivalent;
