Purpose of the job

Overall responsibility for ensuring efficient operation of the engineering function, including day to day breakdown maintenance, planning preventative maintenance and organising Engineering team to achieve tasks within defined timescales and targets, in a way that minimises costs and maximises efficiencies whilst at no time jeopardising Quality, Food Safety or the Health and Safety of any individual or product. The Engineering Manager is responsible for the plants’ overall asset care, site services to support manufacturing activities.

Key performance criteria:

Strategy Implement

  1. Ensures the integrity and reliability of plant by implementing and effectively administering maintenance systems for the brewery.
  2. Establishing and maintaining a robust improvement agenda for all aspects of engineering across site to achieve optimum operational opportunities.
  3. Lead cross functional loss deployment teams for Machine Breakdowns, minor stops and speed restrictions to achieve loss reduction.
  4. Contribute to the creation and implementation of best practice maintenance vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance.
  5. Contribute to new business initiatives and projects and review and communicate the impact on Maintenance activities.

Maintenance Effort

  1. Ensuring compliance with HBSA health, safety, and risk regulations.
  2. Fulfil the site appointment as GMR2.1 competent person.
  3. Ensuring effective fixed asset maintenance and management.
  4. Manage the technical / maintenance teams responsible to deliver Projects, Innovation, Infrastructure and Services to the site.
  5. Develop, deploy and implement plans to ensure the best utilization of assets in the sites as well as supervise and give guidance on the maintenance of such assets.
  6. Prepare and Manage Capital budget and Capital Expenditure Proposals in coordination with cluster and category requirements.
  7. Liaison with Engineering Excellence teams for technology upgrades.
  8. Responsible for the Safety of all project-related operations within the manufacturing sites, as well as maintaining and setting of safe working procedures; including management of Health, Safety and Environmental aspects of project management from design, equipment selection, project implementation (site safety), commissioning and final project handover.
  9. Implementation of the capital projects portfolio post approval; to project closure, following Early Equipment Management.
  10. Create and implement plans to continuously improve site infrastructure needs such as energy, water, treatment, steam and all infrastructure services, contracts and contractors.
  11. Collaborate with Operations Team to drive site and line efficiencies and reduce waste.
  12. Manage the Projects, Innovation and Maintenance budgets. Asset care and improvement through establishing and maintaining an effective system of preventative maintenance applicable to plant and services.
  13. Manage the engineering contractors and ensure statutory and legal compliance.
  14. Optimize maintenance cost, MTBF, and MTTR for production lines. Optimize spare parts safety stock levels in line with working capital targets of the manufacturing sites.
  15. Implement control measures to ensure system accuracy in accounting of spares and spares consumption.
  16. Implement projects on Energy Efficiency program and sustainability.
  17. Coach and develop the team across the site on technical and technology issues.
  18. Securing, rationalization and standardization of engineering spares.
  19. Implementation and management of engineering standards.

People Management

  1. Manage, coach and develop a high performing Maintenance team that meets agreed objectives, and which delivers best practice results, added value and continuous improvements.
  2. Set department objectives/KPIs and review and assess ongoing performance of direct reports.
  3. Report on achievement of targets and identify any actions required.
  4. Consistently promote high standards through personal example and roll out through the team so that each member of the team understands the standards and behaviors expected of them.
  5. Ensure the delivery of the People Strategy within area of accountability.
  6. Manage and lead the team, ensuring adequate staffing levels.
  7. Motivate and coach the team to operational success.
  8. Monitor the completion of tasks and ensure good performance and record on appropriate systems.
  9. Review, implement and update company records e.g. training matrices, performance reviews, risk assessments.
  10. Communicate KPIs from the strategic annual plan so that each employee is aware.

Budgeting & Control

  1. Input and hold responsibility for maintenance budgets.
  2. Prepare the annual Maintenance budget and forecasts/ROFO and all Capital Expenditure proposals as well as ensuring compliance with legal standards. Manage the budget from identification to completion of projects.
  3. Provides and maintains cost effective services and utilities by maintaining an overview of the purchasing / use of power, gas, water and trade waste.

Departmental Organization

  1. Leads a team of highly motivated, well trained and competent staff by agreeing departmental performance standards, providing regular feedback and developing staff training programs.

Relationship Management

  1. Work as part of the Management team to share ideas and improve operation, recommending, supporting and implementing continuous improvement activities and process and procedure improvements to optimize results and improve quality of delivery, in line with quality standards requirements delivery in line with Company and Customer requirements.
  2. Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance.
  3. Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the maintenance strategy.
  4. Communicate with stakeholders the impact of market change and potential effects on engineering design and development.
  5. Recommend solutions without compromising quality or service while optimizing cost.
  6. Liaise and communicate with other departments, customers, suppliers and other service providers.
  7. Ensure an effective interface with other departmental staff is maintained.

Job Requirements

Education

  1. Relevant tertiary qualification: B ENG, BSC, B- Tech, NHDT (NQF7).
  2. Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) is essential and compulsory as Brewery is above 3000kW capacity.
  3. Postgraduate qualification would be advantageous.

Experience

  1. 5-10 years in FMCG/ Manufacturing operations experience.
  2. 3 years in a managerial role.
  3. Proficient leadership and management experience across large Teams, Stakeholders and Suppliers/ Third Parties/ Contractors.
  4. Must have lead projects from end to end looking at design, budget creation and control and project execution.
