Lehigh University Libraries seeks a collaborative and knowledge-equity centered library professional to join our team of liaison librarians within Lehigh’s merged Library and Technology Services (LTS) organization in the role of Open Knowledge Librarian (Position Number: S97090). Reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Instruction & Outreach, this position serves as a campus expert in existing and emerging scholarly publishing models, advocates for open and public access to scholarship and knowledge, and assists in developing outreach, policy, and infrastructure to support knowledge equity and sharing. This position will partner with library and other LTS staff, faculty, and administrative stakeholders to foster awareness of trends, regulations, and opportunities in academic publishing; to investigate open scholarship licensing agreements and funding models; and to operationalize related processes including obtaining content for Lehigh’s newly updated institutional repository, Preserve.

This position will also lead library copyright instruction and provide consultative copyright guidance to campus. Additionally, this position will also support student learning and knowledge sharing through the facilitation of open educational resources use and open pedagogy initiatives.

Essential job functions:

  1. Open Access & Publishing Outreach: The Open Knowledge Librarian leads outreach for the university’s institutional repository, Preserve, develops programming and documentation on publishing topics, and works collaboratively with staff within LTS and across the university to promote and support knowledge equity and open access initiatives and opportunities. Additionally, the role assists with open data access and the digital preservation of theses and dissertations.
  2. Open Educational Resources & Open Pedagogy: In alignment with curricular needs, the Librarian supports faculty in adopting and creating open educational resources (OER) and promotes open pedagogy practices, including renewable assignments and student knowledge creation.
  3. Copyright: The Librarian will serve as the lead librarian on copyright and intellectual property developments and issues, providing campus instruction, creating documentation on resources and best practices, and consulting with users on copyright concerns such as fair use, Creative Commons, and author’s rights.
  4. Professional development: Based on institutional, organizational, and individual goals, the Open Knowledge Librarian will pursue professional development learning opportunities. The Librarian will maintain regional, national, and global professional scholarly communications network in order to maintain current awareness of open knowledge practices and possibilities.

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Three to five years of related work experience
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly publishing and open access principles and regulations, including experience with institutional repositories, open educational resources (OER), and copyright
  4. Higher education outreach and engagement experience
  5. Experience working both independently and collaboratively across varied groups within a complex organization
