Job Purpose

• To primarily teach subject areas in Sport / Exercise Science and Research at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels according to a syllabus and ensure updated and relevant workplace context.
• To support the department and faculty to enhance the effectiveness of the academic project, including academic initiatives, community engagement, coordination of work integrated learning.
• To undertake research and supervision of postgraduate students.
• To continuously engage in personal and professional development.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  1. Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Sport Science and/ Human Movement Science or equivalent Master’s qualification.
  2. At least two (2) years’ relevant lecturing experience and/or delivery of classes in Higher Education.
  3. An underpinning undergraduate qualification in Sport Science and/ Human Movement Science or related field/discipline.
  4. Knowledge of the higher education landscape in SA.
  5. Evidence of research and publications.
  6. Knowledge and experience of hybrid models of teaching and learning (FTF and online learning).
  7. Membership of professional body e.g. South African Health Professions Council.

Recommended: Registration for Doctoral degree will be an added advantage.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

  1. Teaching and Learning: Lectures in both undergraduate and postgraduate subjects primarily within the field of Human Movement Science / Sport / Exercise Science. Develop subject guides in compliance with university policies. Use appropriate teaching and learning methods, practices, and technologies. Develop learning materials for students. Assist students with challenges in understanding the subject content and manage the appointment of tutors and/or mentors.
  2. Academic Management: Development and Implementation of the department and faculty strategic goals in line with the institutional strategic goals.
  3. Representation: Represent the department at various committees (A member of the Faculty Executive, Senate and other faculty committees).
  4. Financial Management: Management of the budget.
  5. Administration: Assists with the registration of students. Administer student attendance registers, assessment records, and upload learners' results to the Marks Administration System. Set and conduct formative assessments. Examine and moderate summative assessments. Report progress on curriculum developments.
  6. Community Service & Outreach: Contributes to community initiatives by integrating community interventions into the curriculum.
  7. Counselling: Provides academic counselling and mentoring to learners. Identify students at risk & implement mitigation strategies.
  8. Quality Assurance: Contributes to Quality Assurance through committee meetings and the submission of relevant documents, as requested.
  9. Recruitment / Admissions / Marketing: Contributes to the planning for 'Open Day' and attends CPUT’s 'Open Day' event.
  10. Personal / Professional Development: Keeps abreast with current developments in their field of study and its curricula implications.
  11. Human Resources Management: Subscribes to and abides by the University performance management system and identifies training needs for personal career development.
  12. Industry Advisory Board and Partnerships: Liaise with commerce and industry regarding Experiential Training, new techniques/technologies, and research projects.
  13. Mentoring: Contribute towards the development of junior academic staff. Guidance of staff (mentor).
  14. Research: Conducts research, supervises and conducts lectures with post-graduate students, publishes regularly e.g., journal articles, books, chapters in books.
  15. Health & Safety: Ensure compliance with university health and safety rules and regulations.
