We are currently looking for a Junior Network Infrastructure Engineer to support the business in achieving its strategic objectives.

As a Junior Network Infrastructure Engineer in the Dimension Data Intelligent Infrastructure team, you will provide operational and engineering support across all DD Global Service Provider Network elements across the MPLS, Internet, Data Centre, DWDM and SDH infrastructure focusing on the Core Infrastructure. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring that these networks are run optimally and according to standards as well as growing the network to meet customer demands. The engineer will form part of the Networks Infrastructure team and will be based at The Campus in Bryanston.

What we will expect you to do:

As a Junior Network Infrastructure Engineer you will be required to perform the following:

  1. Day to day maintenance of the core network comprising but not limited to the following platforms:
  • Cisco: Router platforms running IOS, IOS-XE and IOS-XR software.
  • Cisco: Switching platforms running IOS and IOS-NX software.
  • Cisco: ONS 15454 and 15600 Optical kit (SDH and DWDM).
  • Juniper: MX series router/switch.
  • Tejas: TJ1400, TJ1600.
  • Infinera: DTN-X, DNA.
  1. Installing software on platforms, racking, and stacking and deploying into the network.
  2. Cabling pertaining to infrastructure at multiple locations which may include self-cabling or ordering of cabling and making sure it is connected.
  3. Management of self-sparing of equipment and ensure it is in working order and easily available when required. Ordering of parts and ensuring they are tested and stored for self-sparing.
  4. Labelling of equipment and cabling to ensure it is in accordance with prescribed standards.
  5. Decommissioning of old equipment from live network and the respective cabling as in accordance with standards.
  6. Shipping of parts and ensuring that parts are in working order to respective locations.
  7. Perform routine health check on network and escalate or drive incidents to resolution.
  8. Review and approve vendor changes and ensuring that all relevant parties are informed and that post the changes all is working as expected.
  9. Performing audits on infrastructure like cabling, power, configurations, errors to only mention a few.
  10. Own an operational performance report with internal and external parties to improve monthly uptime and reduce capacity risks where required.
  11. Perform software upgrade on equipment.
  12. Report tickets with OEM vendors related to hardware and software failures.
  13. Ticket handling escalated to the team.
  14. BGP updates on peering session.

Requirements

Key requirements

  • At least 1 year’s experience as an engineer within an ISP, Telco or VPN service provider environment.
  • Must have an understanding of routing & switching skills.
  • A degree or related diploma will be advantageous.
  • Programming skills with the mindset of automation will be advantageous.
  • Related vendor certifications will also be advantageous.
  • The candidate should be willing to learn and grow his skill set to meet the needs of the business.
  • The candidate should be a self-starter.
  • The candidate must be highly energized and enthusiastic and willing to be on call 24/7/365.
  • The candidate must be a team player with the ability to learn quickly and work well with minimal supervision.
  • The candidate must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • The candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
