Job Specification: Surveyor Foreman

Location: Paarl, South Africa

Salary: R28,000 - R45,000 pm

Position Overview

The Surveyor Foreman combines technical surveying expertise with leadership skills to oversee construction site operations. This role ensures alignment with project plans, safety standards, and quality requirements while managing both the technical surveying processes and team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  1. A. Planning
    • Develop daily and weekly activity plans to ensure smooth operations.
    • Strategically place and verify the availability of materials alongside trenches and work areas.
    • Monitor progress against targets, preparing regular reports.
    • Identify and expose underground services before work begins.
  2. B. Labour Management
    • Provide clear instructions to team leaders and operators prior to starting tasks.
    • Maintain discipline and morale within the team, fostering a motivated workforce.
    • Train and mentor junior staff, including students, in surveying techniques and practices.
    • Facilitate open and effective communication between all project stakeholders.
  3. C. Plant and Equipment Management
    • Ensure proper use, maintenance, and storage of surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS systems, and levels.
    • Conduct regular inspections of tools and instruments, reporting any issues or discrepancies.
    • Maintain surveying materials such as profiles, pegs, and tamnanis in good condition.
    • Record and report equipment downtime and mechanical problems promptly.
  4. D. Surveying Operations
    • Perform topographical, boundary, and as-built surveys with precision.
    • Set out construction projects, ensuring alignment and levels meet project specifications.
    • Verify the accuracy of benchmarks, survey beacons, and existing connection points.
    • Review levels and alignments, identifying and resolving any clashes with existing services.
    • Accurately measure and record data for analysis, project planning, and reporting.
    • Ensure recovery and proper management of survey materials post-project.
  5. E. Cost and Contractual Management
    • Measure daily work and complete accurate survey and costing sheets.
    • Assign cost codes to resources such as fuel, labour, and equipment.
    • Set out work in line with project drawings, specifications, and company standards.
    • Record as-built data and maintain accurate records of all survey information.
  6. F. Quality Assurance and Safety
    • Ensure all surveying activities adhere to safety regulations and quality standards.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve discrepancies between field measurements and project designs.
    • Maintain quality control processes and communicate effectively with engineers and project managers.
  7. G. Public Relations and Communication
    • Foster professional relationships with engineers, clients, and the public.
    • Address public access requirements and resolve potential challenges on-site.
    • Communicate potential issues and solutions to the Site Agent or project team.
  8. H. Additional Responsibilities
    • Perform any other reasonable duties in line with the roles responsibilities and expertise.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or Civil Engineering.
  • Proven experience as a Surveyor Foreman or Civil Surveyor in the construction industry.
  • Proficiency in using surveying equipment and software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Leica, Trimble).
  • Strong mathematical and technical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to construction sites.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Registration with a recognized professional body (e.g., SAGC or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of local construction codes and regulations.
  • Experience in roadworks, earthworks, and large-scale civil infrastructure projects.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork abilities.
