Design Engineer – Roads Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer – Roads Specialist for a 12-month contract on a large-scale infrastructure project. This exciting opportunity involves designing and overseeing the development of roadworks, ensuring that the design adheres to the highest technical standards, safety regulations, and project specifications.

As a Design Engineer specializing in roads, you will be responsible for creating innovative and sustainable road designs, conducting feasibility studies, and ensuring compliance with both national and international engineering standards. You will collaborate with fellow engineers, stakeholders, and contractors to deliver efficient, cost-effective designs while addressing environmental and safety concerns

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop road infrastructure solutions, including road alignment, cross-sections, and pavement design.
• Perform traffic analysis and geometric design to optimize road capacity and ensure safety.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and reports in compliance with South African road design codes and international best practices.
• Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather essential data for the design process.
• Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and clients to ensure designs are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality.
• Review and assess third-party designs, providing technical support and guidance where necessary.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, safety standards, and quality assurance processes throughout the design phase.
• Provide cost estimation input and support the preparation of tender documents.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in road design technologies and South African standards.

Key Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Registration with ECSA as a Pr Tech Eng or Pr Eng is essential. Pr Techni will not be considered.
• A minimum of 3 years post-registration experience with ECSA.
• Experience working on major road projects is required, with preference given to those with experience in airport or higher-level road projects. (ACSA/SANRAL)
• Strong background in road design, including alignment, geometric design, and pavement solutions.
• Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills to manage challenges related to design vs. construction activities.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, contractors, and clients.

Desired Experience & Skills:

• Experience as the Lead Design Engineer on at least 3 relevant projects.
• Strong ability to manage and resolve adhoc construction challenges that deviate from the proposed design.
• Knowledge of South African road design codes and international best practices.
