Data Engineer

Are you a strategic leader with a passion for data engineering and a commitment to data security and governance?

Do you excel in designing and maintaining robust data architectures that drive business value? As part of the innovative Brambles Data & Analytics team, reporting directly to the Team Lead Data Engineering, you will take the lead in creating and optimizing complex data models, ensuring data quality, security, and compliance.

Your expertise will help shape the data strategy and architecture, supporting business decisions across the organization. This position is based in South Africa.

What You'll Do:

  1. Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
  2. Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  3. Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  4. Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and AWS 'big data' technologies.
  5. Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
  6. Work with stakeholder teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
  7. Keep our data separated, documented, and secure through the development of a centralized analytics data lake for the APAC region.
  8. Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our data product into being an innovative industry leader.
  9. Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
  10. Use large datasets to build dashboards and reports to support senior management in effective decision making.
  11. Design effective reports and dashboards using visualization techniques and tools.

What will ensure your success in the Role:

  1. Educational Background: Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Statistics, or related technical fields.
  2. Extensive Experience: years of experience in a similar position preferable in complex environments in multinational companies.
  3. Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
  4. Data modeling in SQL Server Analysis Services & Power BI plus experience using other visualization tools.
  5. Experience building and optimizing 'big data' data pipelines (distributed processing systems), architectures, and data sets, preferably Apache Spark.
  6. Building reports and dashboards – ideally in Power BI Desktop or other visual tools.
  7. Experience with cloud solutions in Azure / AWS.
  8. Familiar with SCRUM / Agile working methods.
  9. Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages / drawbacks.
  10. Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  11. Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management.
  12. Experience with Amazon cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, S3; Redshift; Deeque.
  13. Excellent understanding Microsoft SQL Server or equivalent relational database.
  14. Knowledge of integration tools such as SSIS, AWS Glue, PySpark.
  15. Knowledge of Data mining and modeling tools such as SSAS.
  16. Use of cloud technologies, in particular AWS, Databricks, Power BI / Tableau / QlikSense / Thoughtspot or Equivalent.
  17. Experience with object-oriented / object function scripting languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc.
