Clinical Coordinator: Physiotherapy (5/8th Appointment)

As an academic unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at Stellenbosch University (SU), the focus of the Division of Rural Health (Ukwanda) is on making a difference to rural healthcare through empowering students, health workers and communities for wellness.

The Division Of Rural Health (Ukwanda) Achieves This By:

  • providing transformative and contextualised training for students at all levels, in response to the needs of rural populations;
  • uniting communities, students and staff who are motivated by passion, care and hope to respond to society’s needs;
  • undertaking relevant and socially accountable research in collaboration with partners;
  • engaging constantly with the FMHS and the broader University to ensure that equity for rural communities remains an important focus;
  • being a resource and model of innovation for other institutions in Africa and beyond.

The Ukwanda Clinical Coordinator: Physiotherapy facilitates training, supervision accreditation, and development of training sites, and supports clinical sites, clinical educators, and students in the Division of Rural Health (Ukwanda) for Physiotherapy students on the Rural Clinical School (RCS) training platform. Training locations vary, but may include sites in Worcester, Rawsonville, Ceres and Robertson, or others as required.

The Clinical Coordinator: Physiotherapy reports to the HOD: Ukwanda and the HOD: Physiotherapy.

Duties/Pligte

  • Clinical Orientation and Training:
  • Developing, supporting and guiding student activities on the platform.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and functionality of the clinical platform.
  • Contributing to the optimisation and development of the curriculum.
  • Inter-professional Education, Collaboration, and Practice (IPECP):
  • Promoting and facilitating training in an interprofessional context for students sharing clinical sites.
  • Enhancing the IPECP experience on the platform.
  • Building the capacity of the communities engaged in Inter-professional Education.
  • Collaborating with other discipline-based coordinators on the RCS platform to promote IPECP.
  • Discipline-Specific Responsibilities:
  • Scoping and managing resource requirements, including the equipment and material needs for clinical sites.
  • Planning for and organising efficient timetables.
  • Liaising with the Rural Clinical School, Division of Physiotherapy, students, and partners.
  • Community Engagement:
  • Liaising with staff of the Division and external agencies - Department of Health, Education, Social Services, NGOs within and around the platform.
  • Fostering relationships, communication and cooperation with other divisions and departments, external organisations and the public around academic programmes.
  • Promoting a positive image of the Division/Department/Faculty/University to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Student Support:
  • Orientating students at the beginning of their clinical placements.
  • Providing ongoing support to clinicians, clinical teachers, and students throughout their training.
  • Partnership Engagement:
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with key partners.
  • Participating in community projects and engaging with other tertiary institutions, community organisations, public bodies, and private companies.
  • Collecting statistics as required by sites for governance purposes, including the Department of Health.
  • Administration:
  • Managing and keeping track of student statistics and academic records.
  • Attending meetings when required and participating in discussions.
  • Maintaining patient databases where applicable.
  • Ensuring effective communication with students and other staff on the platform.
  • Monitoring and managing resources related to the role.
  • Facilitating regular meetings and communications with local stakeholders and community partners.
  • Maintaining professional competence, including registration with relevant professional bodies.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • At least a BSc Physiotherapy degree or equivalent.
  • Registered / registerable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a physiotherapist.
  • Experience in teaching (as educator, tutor, or assistant).
  • Clinical supervision experience in physiotherapy.
  • At least two years' post-community service clinical experience, predominately in the field.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Master's degree.
  • Evidence of a teaching portfolio and teaching scholarship.
  • Research outputs.
  • Proven participation in multi-/inter-/trans-professional teamwork activities.
  • Good communication and teaching skills.
  • The ability to teach effectively in English and Afrikaans.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to manage and adapt to change.
  • A high level of emotional intelligence.
