Company Description

The COO will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of the company and its projects by optimizing business processes, driving adherence to organizational protocols, and supporting the CEO in managing key initiatives. This role is both strategic and operational, requiring exceptional organizational skills, the ability to manage cross-functional teams, and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. This role is Cape Town based, with frequent travel within the African continent to oversee project activities.

Job Description
  1. Operational Leadership
    • Collaborate with the CEO to drive organizational initiatives and operational goals.
    • Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, including implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and project planning.
    • Lead the development and execution of business strategies aligned with the company’s short- and long-term objectives.
    • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, clients, partners, and investors.
    • Ensure that sufficient capital investments and budgets are in place to meet growth and profitability targets.
  2. Operational Efficiency
    • Lead cross-functional projects and initiatives, ensuring timely execution and alignment with strategic goals.
    • Monitor the progress of key initiatives and provide regular updates to the CEO.
    • Implement project management frameworks to support efficient execution across departments.
    • Oversee performance management systems to track organizational and individual progress.
  3. Team Leadership and Development
    • Build and lead high-performing teams by fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous development.
    • Mentor and develop department heads and key leaders within the organization.
    • Ensure effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention strategies are in place.
    • Promote a highly inclusive culture where employees can thrive and achieve organizational goals.
  4. Financial Oversight
    • Work closely with the finance team to manage budgets and financial activities.
    • Ensure that financial goals and budgets are translated into actions by all departments.
    • Analyse financial data and prepare detailed reports and forecasts for the CEO and board.
    • Ensure the effective allocation of resources to support growth and operational goals.
  5. Compliance and Risk Management
    • Ensure compliance with national and local business regulations, taking appropriate action when necessary.
    • Stay informed on changes to industry regulations and implement adjustments to maintain compliance.
    • Develop and oversee risk management strategies to safeguard the company’s operations and reputation.
Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, Media, Events or a related field; MBA or equivalent is a plus.
  2. Understanding of accounting / corporate finance principles and experience in this area will be considered a great asset.
  3. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in the events industry.
  4. Other relevant experience and qualifications considered.
  5. French, Portuguese and Arabic language considered a great asset.
  6. Proven ability to manage complex projects and cross-functional teams.
  7. Exceptional organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.
  8. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
  9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  10. Software in use by the company: Xero, HubSpot, Google tools, Adobe Creative Suite.
