Job description

Old Mutual Insure is Old Mutual Limited’s short term insurance company providing short term solutions across the OM Limited group and customer bases. The CIO is accountable for overseeing the technology-related strategy and initiatives aligned to the Old Mutual Insure business strategy. This role is also accountable for the full end to end technology function, and serves as a leader and innovator for Old Mutual Insure’s Information Technology, this includes the main OMI business and its key subsidiaries. The CIO provides thought leadership in respect of the technology strategy, future architecture roadmap, Information Security, IT Governance, IT delivery, and IT shared services functions. This role is accountable to various IT governance forums and boards. The CIO delivers on agreed strategic objectives through other managers and their teams. The Old Mutual Insure CIO is a member of Old Mutual Limited IT Capability and works collaboratively with the OML CIO to deliver the OML Strategy and the OML IT Strategy. The role holder thus defines within Old Mutual Insure the IT Strategy and within OML significantly influences the OML IT Strategy.

Key Results Areas:

  1. Business specific objectives:
    • Responsible for enabling Old Mutual Insure’s key businesses through technology, owning the overall technology agenda including development, operations including infrastructure, and strategic projects.
    • Responsible for aligning IT Strategy and IT Service Delivery with the Old Mutual Insure business strategy and the OML IT Strategy.
  2. IT Architecture Capability:
    • Responsibility for the architectural direction of OMI, including the target state and any associated roadmap to get there.
    • Full responsibility for Architecture and Technology governance including relevant review boards and forums.
    • Ensuring continuous alignment to key OML strategic and architectural principles.
    • Working with OML IT Software Engineering to ensure that the architecture capability is sufficient to support the Old Mutual Insure IT strategy.
  3. Information Security and IT Risk Management:
    • Protecting organization’s information systems, ensuring regulatory adherence, and managing potential threats that could impact the business.
    • Contributing to the OML Information Security Strategy and ensuring that this is relevant to Old Mutual Insure and then delivering in Old Mutual Insure the elements of that strategy.
    • Ensures that there is clear assessment of IT risks and that appropriate mitigating action is being taken across Old Mutual Insure.
  4. Management Effectiveness:
    • Accountable for the development & execution of Old Mutual Insure’s IT strategy.
    • Integrates agile and model delivery and metrics across the people, process, finance, IT effectiveness and customer dimension of the business.
    • Manage and report on business performance; hold direct reports accountable for achievement of business plans, and take corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of business objectives, balancing the need to deliver short-term business objectives with the longer-term delivery of stakeholder value.
    • Member of the OML IT Leadership Team, provides clear direction and leadership to own team, and delivering the benefit to Old Mutual Insure of the OML IT wide capability and vice versa bringing to OML the benefit of the capability in Old Mutual Insure.
    • Embed personal development and the fulfillment of personal potential in the culture of the organization. Build capabilities elsewhere in the organization through mentoring and other informal methods.
  5. Strategy Control Disclosure:
    • Lead and gain agreement for the IT strategy that underpins Old Mutual Insure’s medium and long term business strategy. This will include a focus on how to best step change and make the right strategic technology choices to build future IT capability.
    • Motivates and presents recommendations to Old Mutual Insure’s Exco, and appropriate boards and governance forums.
    • Play a leading role in identifying strategic suppliers for shared technology platforms and supporting implementation at Old Mutual Insure.
    • Represents OML IT at Governance Forums requiring Short Term Expertise.
  6. Thought Leadership:
    • Know in industry and beyond what technology is doing to support increased business value (anchored on business-led thinking).
    • Bring practical perspectives on what this can mean for OMI.
    • Lead the integration of technology into as a key enabler into business strategy.
    • Partner proactively with Data and Advanced Analytics to ensure there is continuously alignment in the overall tech and data strategy for OMI.

Job Requirements:

  1. Relevant IT/Commerce degree, relevant post graduate qualifications is preferable.
  2. Minimum of 10 years’ experience leading an IT function, at least 5 years of this experience should be at an Executive level.
  3. Short Term Insurance Industry experience is preferable.

  1. This role requires a flexible, self-driven person who is comfortable with managing change and dealing with ambiguity.
  2. Led or transformed an IT organisation to an Agile operating model.
  3. Comfortable with automated IT operations; Cloud environments.
  4. A very strong can-do attitude.
  5. A self-starter, showing strong action orientation, with excellent organisational, planning and prioritising skills.
  6. Assuming responsibility and accountability for the successful completion of tasks and maintaining a high standard of excellence.
  7. It also requires an individual with a high level of integrity, maturity and confidentiality.
  8. The successful candidate should have very strong communication (verbal & written) and presentation skills, and strong numerical and analytical skills.
  9. Strong project management skills/ability to see through the completion of projects.
  10. Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  11. Solid interpersonal skills, showing an ability to work through influence rather than control; and to be able to interact at all levels and facilitate the delivery of decisions.
  12. Strong ability to build and maintain relationships and networks.
  13. Ability to work both in a team and independently.
  14. Proven track record in managing diverse, high performing teams.
