Job Description
Technical
Analysing all analytical samples for specific analysis using the correct procedures and/or methods.
Monitoring technical accuracy of results and taking remedial action when necessary; recording data (Evaluation of analytical results).
Updating internal findings, improvement requests, and keeping minutes of internal meetings.
Generating reports detailing analytical results, which may include opinions and interpretations.
Verifying instruments.
Assisting with the maintenance of instruments and apparatus.
Having workable knowledge to calibrate and perform minor maintenance of laboratory and preparation equipment.
Identifying biases and QC issues early and communicating these immediately to the Section Manager.
Diagnosing suspect results and assisting in rectifying problems, whether equipment or analytical.
Addressing client complaints.
Authorizing and validating any new methods under the guidance of the Section Manager.
Administration
Calculating test results as per standard format and/or procedures.
Reporting results within the specified time frame.
Reporting any apparatus or equipment that is not functioning correctly to the Section Manager.
Calculating all test results in a standard format per relevant Test Method Instruction for each workstation.
Transferring data from the instrument to SLIMS.
Making all analytical data and calculations traceable and storing them in the relevant files.
Recording and filing all equipment records for Quality purposes.
Disposing of samples.
Verifying test results against control samples and charts.
Re-analyzing samples when control results are not within control chart limits.
General
Assisting with changing gas cylinders and maintaining other equipment.
Overseeing the cleaning of the laboratory and immediate working area.
Ensuring compliance with quality procedures.
Ensuring compliance with the Laboratory Health and Safety Act.
Performing duties on all relevant workstations as required by the shift workload.
Being willing to work overtime whenever necessary.
Waiting for the arrival of relief at the end of the shift to ensure smooth shift takeover.
Ensuring shift takeover occurs only in the Laboratory building.
Assisting on any lower or above level when necessary.
Assisting with the training of new staff/operators on new methods and/or procedures.
Participating in Operational Integrity projects and campaigns.
Applying Check status process and using Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood.
Adhering to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
Performing any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
Supervising
Assisting with training on new methods and/or procedures.
Controlling timekeeping on the shift.
Planning leave to minimize overtime.
Checking daily staff attendance and addressing any problems timely and proactively.
Ensuring sufficient staff members are on shift.
Production
Planning leave to minimize overtime.

Qualifications
Education:
National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
BTech Chemistry or BSc Chemistry will be an added advantage.
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory.
Operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.
Experience in instrumentation, data collection, and reporting.
Supervisory experience would be an advantage.
Fully acquainted with the SLIMS system (administration & operation).
Additional Information
Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management System.
Ability to troubleshoot instruments and methods used.
Knowledge of calibration standards/quality control standards/verification standards and Certified Reference Materials (CRM’s).
Managing Good Laboratory Practice.
Assisting the Snr Chemist with:
Preparation of SANAS audits.
Managing laboratory documentation.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
