Maintaining the processing and supply of sterile devices to theatre and other auxiliary departments in the hospital.
Management and supervision of CSSD staff.
Responsibilities:
INVENTORY
Keeping facilities stock of sterile supplies up to date by taking regular inventory of stocks, identifying shortages and ordering new equipment when necessary and requested.
No wastage of supplies and stock with a positive stock variance.
BUDGETING
Involvement in the annual budget preparation to ensure all needed equipment and instruments are budgeted for.
Effective management of the CSSD unit, ensuring that all operational requirements are met daily.
Effective management of cost saving in the CSSD environment.
Controlling theft and breakage of instruments.
Quality assurance of theatre packs according to the standard.
Ensure all stock is well controlled and managed.
Budget plans in place to ensure timely replacement of equipment is done and additional/new equipment is planned for.
Effective cost management processes implemented and adhered to.
HYGIENE
Ensure sterility of all equipment and stock at all times.
Evaluate equipment storage facility and develop procedures to keep the equipment free of contamination.
Excellent understanding of the working procedures in CSSD.
Safe and clean working environment with no adverse events reported.
STAFF SUPERVISION
Responsible for the actions of the CSSD assistants to ensure safe, quality practice.
Staff duty delegation and monitoring of performance.
Involvement in recruitment and appointment of staff.
Ability to train the CSSD Assistants to function optimally.
Management of staff, including staff hours.
Effective staff management by ensuring processes are adhered to.
RECORDKEEPING
Diligent recordkeeping to ensure effective tracking and monitoring of the facilities stock utilization.
Effective recordkeeping process to inform the inventory process as a guide to tracking.
INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL
Ensuring that sterile devices remain free of contamination.
Assist in identifying and preventing potential sources of infection in the facility.
Understanding of the Infection Prevention & Control Standards and Sterilization Standards.
Adherence to Standard protocols to prevent contamination.
COMMUNICATION
Communicate effectively with doctors regarding patient requirements.
Ensure handover of reports are communicated at the start/end of each shift.
Practice patient care according to the scope of practice and assume total responsibility for these activities.
Contribute to the holistic care of patients.
Test Autoclaves daily, run a flash cycle and then perform a Bowie Dick test.
Report any problems with the Autoclave immediately to the professional nurse or the Theater unit manager.
Sort, record and wash all surgical instruments, anesthesia tubing, and bottles in the mechanical washer.
Check all instruments for any defects and report to the theater unit manager.
Disinfect all dirty instruments and equipment in the dirty area.
Assemble and pack all surgical instruments and equipment in the dirty area.
Sterilize and store all packs in the sterile store, safely and effectively.
Keep a checklist for every pack and control the contents after each procedure.
Operate all the machines in CSSD safely and effectively.
Keep sterile store neat and tidy.
Ensure that there are enough packs and sets for the next day's operating theater list.
Check and record stock level of all items and monitor expiry date.
Receive linen from laundry, check, fold, and pack for sterilization.
Any torn linen must be put aside and reported to the theater unit manager.
Collect non-sterile surgical instruments and deliver all processed sterile packs to the wards and divisions.
Perform on-call duties whenever assigned on the roster.

SELF CONDUCT & SELF DEVELOPMENT
Report for duty at; Day shift – 06:45.
Initiate and participate in ward meetings and contribute to improve patient care and good teamwork.
Schedule and attend all training offered, as agreed with by the Theater unit manager.
Keep a record of your personal and employee in-service training.
Attend a minimum of 18 hours training per year.
Employee is accountable and responsible.

ASSETS AND STOCK MANAGEMENT
Ensure ability to operate/utilize all equipment in Theater.
Safeguard equipment against damages and theft.
Report any faulty equipment to the shift leader immediately.
Charge all stock/equipment used in CSSD to ensure current procedure as per Theater SOP.
Check stock and equipment as directed by the Theater unit manager.
Contribute to cost-saving measures pertaining to the usage of telephone, electricity, stationery, and other materials.
Reduction in repairs due to mishandling.
Prevent wastage.
Improved stock control.
POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Adhere to all AHC policies and procedures.
Comply with all legislation regulating CSSD Standards.
Comply with legislation relating to the basic conditions of employment act, occupational health and safety act, and labor relations act.
Awareness of AHC and unit standards.

Prevent Medico-Legal litigation.
Ensure employee works within the delegated tasks by the Theater unit manager.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Reporting of all adverse incidents within 24 hours as per policy to the Theater unit manager.

Achieve accreditation by department of health and NCS.
