Job description

Duties & Responsibilities

Carpentry Services, Maintenance & Repairs

  • Undertake Planned Preventative Maintenance Tasks allocated by the Supervisor or Maintenance Planner.
  • Undertake Re-active Maintenance Tasks and Repairs allocated by the Supervisor or Maintenance Planner.
  • Ensure that best Operating Practice is applied when undertaking Maintenance Tasks / Repairs, especially of a carpentry nature.
  • Provide a list of required materials to Supervisor, Maintenance Planner or Stores Administrator to enable successful execution of Maintenance Tasks.
  • Assist in keeping workshop tidy and presentable.
  • Complete and issue Check Sheets to Supervisor on a weekly basis.
Building maintenance environment

  • Responsible for assessing, repairing, and maintaining various structures within the building, such as doors, windows, floors, and walls. The objective is to ensure they are safe, structurally sound, and in proper working condition.
Re-active Maintenance

  • Promptly respond to maintenance requests from building occupants or management. The objective is to address the reported issues efficiently and effectively, minimizing disruption and ensuring Occupant’s satisfaction.
Maintenance schedule and Preventive maintenance

  • Proactively inspect and maintain carpentry elements in the building to prevent potential issues or minimize their impact.
Teamwork

  • Building maintenance often involves working alongside other professionals, such as electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians. The objective is to collaborate effectively, communicate any relevant information, and coordinate tasks to ensure smooth operations.
  • Fix damaged doors, windows, floors, walls, or other wooden structures within the building.
  • Install, repair, and maintain wooden fixtures, fittings, and furniture within the building, such as cabinets, shelves, staircases, handrails, and mouldings, with precision and attention to detail.
  • Apply finishes, such as paint, stain, or varnish, to protect and enhance the appearance of completed projects.
  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments of wooden structures to identify any signs of damage, wear, or potential hazards. Provide recommendations for repairs or replacements as necessary.
  • Select appropriate materials for carpentry projects and ensure their procurement. This may involve estimating quantities, sourcing suppliers, and coordinating deliveries.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and best practices while performing carpentry tasks. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with building codes and industry standards.
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities, including work orders, repair logs, and materials used. Provide accurate and timely reports on completed tasks, ongoing projects, and any outstanding issues.
  • Interact professionally with building occupants, management, and other team members. Listen to their concerns, provide updates on maintenance activities, and ensure clear and effective communication throughout the process.
  • Transportation of fellow employees.
  • Complete a minimum of four work orders per day.
  • Construct and assemble frameworks, structures, furniture, and other items according to specifications.
  • Join materials using nails, screws, staples, adhesives, or other fasteners, and apply appropriate techniques such as gluing, doweling, or mortise and tenon joints.

  • Carpentry Skills: A carpenter should possess a strong foundation in carpentry skills, including measuring, cutting, shaping, and joining wood and other materials. They should be familiar with various hand and power tools used in carpentry, such as saws, drills, chisels, planes, and routers.
  • Blueprint Reading: Carpenters often need to interpret and understand blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to plan their work and ensure accurate measurements and installations.
Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • Carpenter Diploma or Recognition of previous learning in the field of carpentry
  • 3 years of experience
  • Good knowledge of carpentry repairs and maintenance
  • Knowledge of tools and materials used in the assigned area of responsibility.
