Assistant Materials Tester

SGS South Africa is seeking to fulfil a key role in the SGS Matrolab Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, Free State and Gauteng Civil Engineering Laboratories. The role includes assisting the Supervisor/ Laboratory Manager with all tasks, whether it’s on site or in the commercial laboratory. The Assistant Materials Tester will ensure that the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work-related instructions from the technicians/supervisors or authorized personnel.

Job Description

Reporting to the Site Laboratory Manager:

1. Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the company equipment regularly and ensuring all test equipment is cleaned after completion of any job.
2. Responsible for the neatness of apparatus and environment, including cleaning up the site or workshop where the job was carried out and ensuring it's free of all consumables used to perform the job (masking tape, tins).
3. Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
4. Orally report deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances.
5. Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the authorized site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.
6. Conduct quality and safety inspections as required.
7. Do daily “Safety Talks” at the commencement of the shift and submit paperwork to Senior Inspector.
8. Handle all handover activities to the next shift in a swift and efficient manner.
9. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Clothing / Equipment and enforce the use, storage, and maintenance of PPE to the operators at all times.
10. Maintain good housekeeping and keep the workplace clean and tidy.
11. Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the direct line manager.

To assist with training of Operators and complete Competence Modules.

Qualifications

1. Matric / Grade 12 completed
2. Sampling and preparation experience advantageous
3. Must be physically willing and able to work with, pick up, and move samples as and when required.
4. Proficiency in English
5. Basic literacy and penmanship
6. Must be capable of understanding, implementing, and maintaining the quality system requirements after training.
7. Must be able to understand, implement, and maintain the Civil Engineering Test Methods after training (e.g., SANS, THN 1)
