Business & Legal Affairs, Compliance Manager

In a Nutshell

The Business & Legal Affairs, Compliance Manager will be responsible for managing copyright infringement, improper activity, and related matters. Improper activity includes, but is not limited to, infringement, artificial streaming, policy circumvention, and other types of misuse or abuse of systems and content. This role will manage disputes and escalated legal matters and help facilitate and/or conduct investigations as appropriate, while communicating professionally and diplomatically with our clients, Digital Service Providers (DSPs), third party claimants, and other stakeholders regarding these issues. Working alongside our Business & Legal Affairs, Rights Administration Manager, the Compliance Manager will be responsible for assisting in the development of policies and processes, mitigating and/or resolving copyright and improper activity related issues, prioritizing escalated matters, ensuring internal and external compliance with policies and processes, and other related matters as needed.

What you will do

  1. Review, track, and process copyright, trademark, and other types of improper activity notices
  2. Communicate with Symphonic clients and other third parties regarding any and all copyright, trademark, and/or other types of improper activity notifications according to Symphonic’s policies and processes
  3. Track timelines for communications and responses within the established rights administration and improper activity framework
  4. Develop and implement policy
  5. Investigate potential improper activity and related matters
  6. Collect, review, investigate, and summarize documentation received in response to improper activity matters, including but not limited to notices, counter notices, affirmations of indemnification, and documentation of rights; and provide feedback and recommendations regarding same to ensure proper rights and compliance
  7. Maintain, track, and store documentation and reporting for any and all copyright, trademark, improper activity, and other types of notices received and communications regarding same
  8. Research client, client history, account information and other data necessary for decision-making on improper activity
  9. Maintain tracking of strike and termination notice related information
  10. Research and analyze trends and emerging law and industry practices related to copyright and other types of improper activity and actively contribute to the legal team concerning same
  11. Complete other projects as identified by the legal team
  12. Communicate and liaise with other internal stakeholders concerning legal policies, processes and procedures
  13. Provide support on any escalated legal matters as they relate to copyright, artificial streaming, other types of improper activity, or other legal related issues
  14. Brief General Counsel and Director of Business & Legal Affairs regularly and consistently on the status of improper activity related matters, findings, and actions
  15. Prepare and compile information and responses to external parties concerning rights and other improper activity escalations, disputes, and litigation

  5. Passion about copyright law, DMCA, improper activity within the music and entertainment industry, fraud prevention, and related topics such as AI issues and regulation; and excitement to continue learning and expanding knowledge in these areas to be a go to for knowledge and resources
  6. Passion about the legal aspects of the music industry, particularly independent distribution and the independent music space
  7. Positive attitude, works well, and is an active participant and communicator in a team-based environment
  8. High standard of ethics, ability to maintain confidential information

What would set you apart

  1. Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is not necessary but would be super helpful!
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business, Marketing, Business, Law, or related fields

What would be the icing on the cake

  1. Experience in copyright dispute management and improper activity, including artificial streaming, and infringement
  2. Experience with Zendesk or similar Helpdesk software
  3. Experience with Monday.com Board applications and Excel
  4. A can-do attitude, willingness to tackle matters outside of the core area of expertise

Additional Insights
This position works alongside the Business & Legal Affairs, Rights Administration Manager under the General Counsel and Director of Business & Legal Affairs on the Legal team at Symphonic. This position is remote. Minimal travel may be required. Applicants must reside in North Carolina, New York, Tennessee (Nashville), or Georgia to be eligible for this position.
