Job Summary

As a key member of the Asia Pacific Excluding China (APEC) Global Design teams, the Vice President, GDAP Project Management, APEC will play a pivotal role in overseeing the APEC Global Design team. This role is integral to the successful execution of the architecture and design, project and construction management, and procurement activities across all Marriott International brands within APEC.

The role is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to address the evolving development and business needs of Marriott International brands in the APEC region. This position serves as a strategic partner, providing counsel to leadership and their teams on brand-related matters, development strategies, and new corporate initiatives within the discipline. She/he must therefore partner effectively with the appropriate continent resources, as well as those positioned at Corporate, to maximize returns and mitigate risk. She/he must also be adept at tapping diverse sources of information, identifying profitable opportunities, and anticipating challenges, thereby strengthening Marriott's competitive advantage through excellence in design and project management.

This Vice President, Global Design, APEC will work in the Singapore office reporting to the Chief Lodging Product Officer, APEC.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Education

  • Baccalaureate degree in Architecture, Design, Project Management, or related areas strongly preferred.
  • Fifteen plus years experience in hospitality designs.

Experience Preferred

  • Excellent business judgment and creative problem-solving attributes and working experience and knowledge of International Construction, Design and Procurement practices.
  • Ability to evaluate business trends and develop and successfully implement new business programs and strategies that enhance business performance.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; role requires considerable liaison with multiple stakeholders and maintenance of considerable internal and external relationships.
  • Skillful negotiator in tough situations; sells ideas persuasively; settles differences and wins concessions without damaging relationships; can be both direct and forceful while remaining diplomatic.
  • Strong leader of people - influential, demonstrates flexibility in approach, and motivates others (who may, oftentimes, not be direct reports) to achieve desired results; ability to work in a matrix organization and make things happen without having to own all of the resources; leverages shared resources to achieve results.
  • Broad experience and knowledge of International contracting legalities and procedures and an understanding of multiple cultural variances and their impact on the development/design/construction process.
  • Ability to consistently make decisions in a timely manner sometimes with incomplete information and under tight deadlines and pressure; comfortable challenging organizational norms and accepted thinking to improve effectiveness.
  • Results oriented; delivers results under difficult conditions and demonstrates balanced judgment under pressure.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

The Primary Responsibilities Of This Role Will Be

  • Develops programs that focus on delivery of cost-effective projects that meet budget, schedule and brand distinction and quality level. Develops overall approaches for project management including Feasibility /Design (Architectural and Interior Design), Procurement, and Accounting control and reporting processes.
  • Manages and coordinates design and construction related activities on all Marriott International branded projects, including the CDR process as required. Prepares the materials for the Global Design portion of the CDR, submission and attend and comment in CDR efforts as required.
  • Develops and manages integrated project schedules. Establishes deliverables from contractors and internal Global Design services and ensures that milestones are met.
  • Is responsible for the development of continent specific new products and prototypes and the development and maintenance of product line criteria and standards.
  • Manages the change process over prototypical design development so that impacts on project cost and schedule are minimized.
  • Adapts Marriott International business and brand requirements/ practices, as required, to reflect the regional location customs, laws, needs and capabilities.
  • Maintains direct line of communication on continent activities with Brand, Operations, Development, Continent Asset Management, Global Design team and assures current data on project cost, quality, and schedule.
  • Creates and manages annual budget relative to headcount, dollars, programs, and projects (department and project basis).
  • Directs the development of regional contracting strategies working closely with Global Design Stakeholders that balance schedule, cost, risk, quality and ensures compatibility with global business and contracting strategies.
  • Manages the allocation of personnel and financial resources in support of overall Marriott International branded programs. Works with other Global Design support staff in assessing and creating plan for overall staffing and skill requirements for projects.
  • Manages front-end pipeline support to the Continent Marriott Development staff.
  • Provides input to and resource for research and development of brand standards and brand positioning criteria for multiple Marriott International branded products.
  • Ensures that continent best practices and lessons learned are shared across all functions and Global Design global efforts. Directs the effort of benchmarking processes, procedures, and facilities against external firms and other operators.
  • Develops and maintains quality assurance program to protect Marriott International interests.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key customers (individual and institutional) to promote Marriott International interests.
  • Tracks and reports to Continent leadership on regional developments and the impact on Marriott International brand process.
  • Sets goals and expectations for direct reports using the Leadership Performance Acceleration (LPA) process and holds staff accountable for successful performance; coach team by providing specific feedback to improve performance; conducts annual performance appraisal with direct reports; and ensures the same occurs at lower levels of his/her organization. Partner with Human Resources to strengthen the organization performance by ensuring effective structures, processes, jobs, and tools are in place for associates to do their jobs effectively.
  • Ensures that training programs are in place for the continent Global Design team which allows them to stay current in their areas of responsibility, provides personal and professional growth, and permits cross-training where appropriate.
  • Maintains approximately 1,600 hours of annual chargeable services to internal and external customers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
