Job description

UWCSEA East has a vacancy for a High School and Middle School Music Teacher from August 2025.

The teaching responsibilities for this position will be distributed across the High School and Middle School. The successful candidate will be a highly resourceful and forward-thinking collaborator, passionate about delivering an exciting music curriculum. The candidate will join a vibrant and successful K-12 Music Department.

Main Responsibilities

  • Teach general High School and Middle School Music classes in a concept-based learning environment.
  • Employ a wide variety of learning and teaching strategies including the use of new technologies to make learning both effective and enjoyable.
  • Be supportive of a child-centred approach to learning, able to nurture high levels of student agency.
  • Work collaboratively with the Music team to plan lessons and further develop the curriculum.
  • Experienced in adapting learning to ensure it is inclusive and accessible to all.
  • Be actively involved in the wide and varied Music Activities Programme on offer.
  • Work collaboratively to assist students in sharing their learning through performances and productions.
  • Work with a high degree of flexibility and be positive towards taking on a variety of roles and responsibilities across age groups in a complex and dynamic department.
  • Be willing to teach a variety of musical styles and cultures in both vocal and instrumental contexts.
  • Maintain student records as required; assess, observe, record and report on student progress, including various approaches to reporting to parents.
  • Attend educational visits; residential and day trips as required.
  • Be genuinely interested in making a positive and proactive contribution to the wider life of the school.
  • Ensure excellent lines of communication with parents through online learning platforms as well as face to face.

Expectations and Standards

Person Specifications

  • A relevant degree, a recognized teaching qualification or certification and considerable teaching experience are expected.
  • A committed and creative practitioner, you will be reflective on your own teaching and student outcomes, seeking out and implementing new ideas and innovative practice to raise achievement.
  • Willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service, though this generally translates to 4 in the Music Department.
  • Keen to collaborate and share your specialist expertise, enthusiastic participation in and delivery of Professional Learning is expected.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners.
