Job Overview
The Sustainability Director is responsible for the continuous development and implementation of Amcor’s sustainability strategy at business group level, in line with the company’s external and internal commitments in this area and the overall Global business strategy.

The Sustainability Director develops and drives the implementation of a consistent sustainability advocacy strategy for the AFAP region. This includes developing and leading our advocacy efforts with relevant constituencies at local and national levels.

The position plays a key role in positioning Amcor as THE leading packaging company for the environment delivering on Amcor’s Sustainability Strategy, the 2025 Pledge and as a supplier of choice for responsible packaging in the Asia- Pacific Region and for Amcor globally.


Principal Accountabilities
There are 7 specific accountabilities for the Sustainability Director – AFAP:

  1. Leading and developing an effective Sustainability team, including:
    • Actively participating as a leader in the AFAP Sales and Marketing team;
    • Assessing quality team capability and work performance;
    • Acting as a mentor to coach and guide other functional team members;
    • Ensuring a formal training plan is in place for sustainability team members; and
    • Assessing development needs and closing gaps.
  2. Strategy, sustainability reporting and responsible supply chains for AFAP
    • Setting AFAP Sustainability strategy annually and reviewing with AFAP SLT for approval;
    • Developing Amcor Sustainability value proposition for regional customers;
    • Establishing annual Enviroaction operating agenda for AFAP and each BU/country including operating plan for achieving the SBTi targets for carbon emissions;
    • Maintaining and issuing quarterly business reporting (QBR) for Enviroaction for AFAP, each BU/country and the regional functions of Procurement, Operations and R&D/Sales;
    • Maintaining policy and procedures, aligned to Amcor Group policy and procedure, for Enviroaction reporting (Ecometrica), responsible supply chains (Sedex / Ecovadis / Modern Slavery) and other external reporting required by Amcor Group;
    • Maintaining update of regulatory requirements in each country relative to sustainability and circularity of packaging in Asia Pacific;
    • Maintaining Sedex / Enviroaction reporting and auditing of AFAP, coordinating with BU/country HR, operations and procurement;
    • Ensure the business is meeting customer and other stakeholder’s expectations in the area of environmental disclosure, ethical business practices and packaging sustainability; and
    • Oversee external communication related to sustainability matters (e.g., environmental product claims)
  3. Customer and Co-worker sustainability engagement
    • Work with R&D and Sales & Marketing (Globally & within the business group) to support regional customer relationships and global engagements with multinational key accounts in the context of sustainability, including customer visits, presentations, and projects.
    • Undertake training of R&D, Sales & Marketing, Procurement and Operational teams in Amcor Sustainability Value Proposition.
    • Establish and maintain with AFAP HR and Sales& Marketing teams’ program of internal engagement of Amcor Sustainability value proposition with co-workers.
    • Co-ordinate with AFAP R&D the use of ASSET lifecycle analysis tool for support of customer’s projects and carbon reduction initiatives.
  4. Enviroaction including AFAP SBTi net zero decarbonisation.
    • Establish and maintain cross functional processes to report Amcor’s Enviroaction targets including Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) targets for AFAP.
    • Drive action plans with BU/country and regional functional teams to achieve Amcor’s Enviroaction targets.
  5. Development of circular materials for AFAP customers
    • Lead and assist R&D, Sales & Marketing, Operations and Procurement teams with implementation of circular materials, including advanced recycled materials (ARM), with customers.
    • Lead with AFAP BU’s / countries the implementation of certification schemes for circular materials, including ISCC Plus.
    • Establish and maintain value chain partnerships in each BU/country for feedstocks, advanced recycling capability and ARM supply.
    • Establish and/or maintain regional partnerships with global partners, NGO’s, EPR providers and other packaging circularity organisations as identified in each BU/country to drive circularity of packaging and sources of circular materials for use by Amcor’s customers.
  6. Advocacy in Asia Pacific
    • Establish and maintain advocacy structure that will drive design for recycling, product stewardship including EPR, circular economy collection and preprocessing of plastic packaging, standards for recycle content and traceability and consumer education.
    • Work with the Corporate Sustainability and Communications teams as well as the other Amcor business groups to bring Amcor’s view to the market and establish working relationships with public institutions, policy makers, associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
    • Monitor legislation and trends across AFAP geographically defined by Amcor’s business; evaluate risks, options, opportunities, and help secure policies advantageous for the environment, society, the industry and Amcor.
    • Drive and implement Amcor’s advocacy strategy for the business group in line with Amcor’s global strategy, including solutions as they relate to packaging litter, end of life solutions, circular economy, extended producer responsibility, and legislation or taxes impacting Amcor business.
    • Work with governmental organizations through industry/advocacy organizations or, where appropriate, directly with legislators and regulators to meet legislative and policy goals.
    • Engage with NGOs and other civil society groups as required for implementing the defined strategy.
    • Support local Amcor management teams on policy and government affairs, building capability and alignment.
    • Drive the agenda and help to lead trade organizations to support Amcor’s agenda and goals, including forming new organizations or coalitions where needed.
    • Coordinate with customers’ and suppliers’ public affairs teams to drive the policy agenda from a value chain perspective and to create strong links with customers and suppliers.
  7. Support actively Corporate/AFAP Initiatives
    • Safety
    Actively participate in the Amcor Flexibles Safety program, lead by example to drive a safe working culture across Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific;
    Ensure adherence to Amcor Safety policies at all time;
    Undertake safety leadership tours and report findings to site leaders.
    • Support Procurement (P+) or any other initiatives


Qualifications/Requirements
Knowledge and Experience

• University degree in Sustainability/Environmental Sciences or related study field (Master’s degree as a minimum).
• Full proficiency in English, major Asian languages a plus.
• 10 + years of professional experience
• 5+ years of experience in corporate sustainability or similar role
• 5+ years of experience in public and/or governmental advocacy roles in Asia.
• Experience in recycling or waste management is preferred within Asia.
• Knowledge of packaging materials, technologies and processes
• Deep understanding of the sustainability landscape, globally and regionally
• Understanding (experience as an additional asset) of circular economy concepts and their implementation for packaging
• Direct knowledge of commercial and regulatory landscape of the secondary market of recycled materials. I.e., the who’s who of the industry.
• Understanding of the industry associations and lobby groups involved in the waste collection secondary market industry.
