Job description

Job Description:

  • Demonstrate effective communication and promote interpersonal skills with all levels of staff & external customers.
  • Provide feedback on instruments and sets utilization.
  • Support team effort and be receptive to feedback.
  • Demonstrate good service behaviours in accordance to the Centre’s standards.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of all work processes.
  • Competent in instrumentation decontamination including sorting, manual and mechanical cleaning methods.
  • Assemble and pack instrumentation according to specifications and accurate documentation of assembled sets.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in operating and maintaining various kinds of processing equipment according to established procedures.
  • Verify all sterilization processes by monitoring sterilizers mechanically, biologically, and chemically.
  • Ensure all documentation is accurately entered.
  • Correct labeling and dispatching of specimens to the appropriate laboratory.
  • Load, unload, and inspect sterilized items from steam sterilizer and hot air oven before proper storage.
  • Adhere to principles of sterility of all sterilized instruments before, during, and after distribution.
  • Ensure availability of instrumentation and supplies when requested by O.R. staff.
  • Replace damaged or lost instruments as required.
  • Inform maintenance personnel to rectify any malfunctioning equipment.
  • Deputize nurse manager/nurse clinician in her absence.

Infection Control:

  • Practice standard precautions and hand hygiene consistently.
  • Wear proper PPE when performing all functions of decontamination.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal in accordance with established guidelines.

Risk Management:

  • Demonstrate action taken in identifying common causes of hazards, assessing risk, and reporting incidents.
  • Ensure all staff are aware of safety plans and expectations.
  • Attend annual fire safety training/drill exercise.

Housekeeping:

  • Maintain the cleanliness of equipment, sterilizers, trolleys, and work surfaces.
  • Keep workplace safe and clean.

Quality Management:

  • Collaborate with the health care team to sustain improvement initiatives.
  • Comply with approved guidelines and safe practices according to quality priorities.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement projects to enhance sterilization processes and delivery of services.
  • Incorporate KAIZEN into work practice and processes.

Financial/Resource Management:

  • Participate in inventory of equipment, instruments, and furniture.
  • Exercise economy and care in the use of equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Assist with effective control of resources by notifying supervisor if additional stock is required.

Learning & Growth:

  • Provide orientation, training of new staff and conduct competency assessments when needed.
  • Serve as a buddy providing supportive information and guidance to newly recruited staff.
  • Attend continuing education/in-service on a regular basis.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, self-development, and personal growth programs.

Others:

  • Inform supervisor of any problems or incidents encountered.
  • Participate in department & organization activities.
  • Take on other responsibilities as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Recognized General Nursing qualification or Diploma in Nursing with 1-2 years’ relevant experience preferred.
  • Advance Diploma in Peri-operative Nursing.
  • Valid SNB License and BCLS Certification.
