Job description

Job Purpose

A Senior Technician in Ophthalmology is responsible for providing personalised, specialised, and cost-effective care to patients in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures.

The Senior Technician in Ophthalmology oversees and ensures the smooth running of the imaging, perimetry, and scan rooms in the eye surgery centre/department of the hospital.

This role also involves assisting the medical, nursing, and clerical staff in the eye surgery centre/department by providing administrative and patient care support, aimed at delivering an overall efficient and effective clinical service to patients.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)

Conduct the following clinical tests/procedures for patients independently:

  • Visual Field
  • IOL calculation
  • A Scan
  • Pentacam
  • Endothelial Cell Count
  • Corneal Pachymetry
  • Corneal Topography
  • Optic Nerve Head Tomography
  • Fundus Fluorescence Angiography
  • Indocyanine Green Angiography
  • Ocular Coherent Tomography

Instruct and supervise junior technicians in Ocular Coherent Tomography and Indocyanine Green Angiography.

Develop the following photo images for clinical examination purposes:

  1. Slit lamp photo
  2. Fundus photo
  3. Stereodisc photos
  4. Photo recopy
  5. Slide recopy
  6. Clinical video tape editing
  • Carry out procedures and investigations as prescribed by clinicians.
  • Deliver safe and competent care to patients at clinics.
  • Collaborate and cooperate with clinicians and other healthcare providers in the smooth delivery of patient care and services.
  • Provide patient/family information and education on disease prevention.
  • Demonstrate proper and economical usage of consumables, pharmaceuticals, and stationery supplies.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Provide supervision, mentorship, and guidance to new/junior technicians in their work.
  • Demonstrate technical skills, knowledge, and critical thinking in the delivery of patient care.
  • Maintain an updated record on all diagnostic equipment inventory and ensure all diagnostic equipment is kept on regular preventive maintenance.

Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)

  • Be responsible for the inventory, storing, archiving, and retrieval of photo slides and images.
  • Assist with slide presentations and photographic coverage during teaching seminars and conferences as required by the ophthalmology department/eye surgery centre.
  • Participate in service quality activities.
  • Engage in community screening initiatives set up by the ophthalmology department and Eye Surgery Centre.
  • Ensure patients’ needs and waiting times are addressed.
  • Demonstrate awareness of current ophthalmology disease management and healthcare practices.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by Nurse Managers/Executives and Senior clinicians.

Job Specification/Requirements

  • Minimum NITEC Qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician with consistent good performance.
  • Effectively bilingual in English and another language.
  • Possess good interpersonal skills, strong team spirit, and communication skills.
  • IT savvy and competent in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Display compassion and a positive, caring attitude towards patients and customers.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
