This role includes ensuring the maintenance, repair, and compliance of tankers with international regulations, managing budgets, coordinating with equipment makers, shipyards, repair companies, and suppliers, and ensuring safe and efficient operation of the fleet. You should be independently assisting ship staff in troubleshooting technical issues and working closely with regulatory bodies, classification societies, and local administration to ensure adherence to SOLAS, MARPOL, and prevailing maritime laws and safety standards.
The role will oversee the technical operations of tanker vessels on tramping trade with oil majors and oil traders. The role will ensure assigned vessels are maintained according to company procedures and international regulations (Class, Flag, USCG, AMSA, and other MoUs). Regular overseas trips to inspect ships will be required. The successful candidate will have the ability to handle occasional work pressure.
Responsibilities:
- Ensuring statutory and Class surveys of vessels are carried out in a timely manner. Arrange all technical repairs/calibration services and safety-related services as per the schedule.
- Work closely with ship staff to ensure that all safety, environmental, and quality procedures are followed to avoid downtime.
- Conduct regular vessel inspections and audits in line with SIRE/TMSA guidelines to identify potential problems and areas for improvement.
- Conduct audits of assigned ships and conduct a minimum of one sailing visit per ship per year.
- Plan and coordinate vessel maintenance, repairs, and dry-dockings.
- Ensure company PMS is followed and updated and provide technical support to ship staff as required.
- Monitor and improve vessel performance, improve efficiency, and CII ratings.
- Manage vessel budgets and control maintenance expenses.
- Monitor and review weekly, monthly, quarterly reporting, etc. from the ships, and ensure that all records are filed in PMS/SharePoint/company’s repository.
- Carry out pre-purchase inspections for target assets and prepare for the takeover of vessels.
- Attend and participate in sea trials of yard deliveries and ensure all observations are closed out.
- Follow up on guarantee claims of each assigned vessel with shipyards/makers for successful closure.
- Participate in the projects assigned by the company.
- Guide and assist Technical Superintendents, Technical Executives, and Purchasers.
- Monitor performances of ship staff and appraise Senior Officers/Engineers/Ratings as required.
- Monitor KPIs of assigned individuals.
- Assist in crew selection.
Minimum Requirements:
- Proficiency certificate: MEO Class 1 Certificate of competency or Certificate of Competency (motor).
- Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s degree/Diploma or equivalent in Marine/Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 4-5 years of experience as Technical Superintendent in a Ship Management/Owner company looking after oil/chemical tankers, with additional experience of gas carriers being an added preference.
- A minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience as Chief Engineer on a Product Tanker.
- Able to prioritize workload and handle ship operations independently.
- Prior experience in operating ME-C engine, Framo system, BWTS, and EGCS.
- Experience with SIRE/CDI inspections.
- Ability to independently carry out incident investigations.
- Experience with drydocking (including special surveys) and retrofit.
- Proficient in the English language.
- Good communication skills.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
