Senior Manager, Technical Underwriting, Propositions, and Initiatives - Retail business
As a key member of the underwriting leadership team, you will demonstrate the highest standards in risk acceptance (in line with Munich Re’s risk philosophy) including delivery of flexible solutions/projects to support the acquisition of new treaty business, retention of existing business and review of complex facultative referrals. You will support the Chief Underwriter and Client Managers in developing and nurturing strong working relationships with Munich Re Singapore’s retail clients across Southeast Asia. You will also oversee the audit program for underwriting retail business.
You will be based in Singapore, and you will report to the Chief Underwriter and Head of Claims – Life, Health & HNW, Southeast Asia (SEA) at the Munich Re branch office in Singapore.
Your Role
- Develop strong working relationships with clients by gaining in-depth knowledge of clients’ business and understanding their needs.
- Develop risk management strategies according to the overall company strategy; drive the execution of these strategies and objectives accordingly.
- Participate actively in marketing activities and industry functions, e.g., holding seminars, workshops, specialist presentations, and technical publications.
- Identify and challenge outdated risk-selection practices and promote change through evidence-based research.
- Support a team of experienced Life & Health underwriters to appraise and underwrite complex risks for Life & Health insurance across Individual, Group, and HNW business streams.
- Ensure underwriting decisions are in line with Munich Re’s risk framework and internal approval processes and guidelines.
- Partner with clients and colleagues to develop and implement client solutions and propositions, e.g., in areas such as automated underwriting, data analytics, and predictive underwriting.
- Manage the retail underwriting audit program, including audit planning, conducting in-depth underwriting audits, and assisting clients with corrective procedures to resolve any key weaknesses discovered.
- Support Client Management, Commercial Team, and Retail Underwriting Team on retail quotes, product approval requests, etc.
- Ensure technical accuracy of treaty documentation and that treaty wording agreed with clients is in line with group treaty guidelines.
- Travel to SEA markets to conduct audits and meet with key clients along with the relevant Client Managers.
Your Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in business/medical/science or related field and professional qualifications in life insurance underwriting/insurance industry (e.g., FALU, ALHC, ACII) is required.
- Technical underwriting skills of the highest order.
- Minimum 15 years’ experience of underwriting experience across all risk types.
- Reinsurance underwriting experience and experience across the Southeast Asian markets would be well-regarded.
- Experience in product development, business administration, operations, and client relationship management.
- Sound knowledge of Life & Health reinsurance products.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in terms of ability to engage and influence both internal and external stakeholders across a wide variety of areas such as regional office, distribution (partners), senior management.
- Excellent social and networking skills as well as a driven, dynamic, commercial, and result-oriented mindset and intercultural competence.
- A wide network of connections in the Southeast Asian market would be well-regarded.
- Willingness to travel within SEA countries is essential.
