Job description

The mission of SFA is to ensure and secure a supply of safe food for Singapore. The National Centre for Food Science (NCFS) supports SFA’s vision of ensuring safe food for all by being a national reference laboratory on food science, conducting/coordinating food safety monitoring to generate scientific data for supporting risk assessment and enforcement of food safety regulations to protect consumer health. Meanwhile, NCFS oversees the application of science and technology to enable an evidence-based approach for ensuring food safety in partnership with stakeholders across the entire food chain and research institutions to address emerging food safety and security concerns.

You will be part of a dynamic team of Food Science Rapid Response Department (FSRRD) under NCFS, contributing to SFA’s food safety monitoring and surveillance programs, risk assessment and food safety standard setting, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. The specialist teams of FSRRD strive to continue develop our testing capabilities and scientific knowledge to keep pace with the challenges of emerging food borne hazards in food.

You will be deployed to the Pesticide Residue Specialist Team under FSRRD. Based on the operation needs of the Department and your career advancement path, there are ample job rotation opportunities within FSRRD and NCFS to broaden your scientific knowledge and sharpen your professional skills.

Duties

  1. Develop and validate new test methods based on advanced analytical techniques such as triple quad GCMSMS, LCMSMS or high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to accommodate the operation needs and keep laboratory competency abreast of international food regulatory development.
  2. Showcase the scientific achievements of the Specialist Team through scientific publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as through the delivery of presentation in international and regional seminars, workshops, and conferences.
  3. Strengthen laboratory productivity via automation and digitisation.
  4. Perform sample testing on pesticide residues or train external parties in the food safety ecosystem to support SFA food safety regulatory and monitoring programs, implementing laboratory quality system to ensure full compliance to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements.
  5. Serve as an expert witness in Court to support prosecution cases for the enforcement of food safety rules and regulations.
  6. Procurement of scientific equipment and laboratory supplies based on the operation needs, ensuring full compliance with financial rules and regulations.
  7. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen regulatory science pertaining to pesticide residues.
  8. Contribute to laboratory training and organisation of proficiency testing program in support of the NCFS’s role as WHO Collaborating Centre, WOAH Collaborating Centre and ASEAN Food Reference Laboratory for Pesticide Residues.
  9. Carry out other assignments as designated by the upper management.
Qualifications/ Other Requirements

  1. The candidate should have minimally a good BSc and preferably a MSc or PhD degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, or other related scientific fields.
  2. A good track record in conducting independent research, method development and peer-reviewed scientific publication.
  3. Good knowledge and hand-on experience in sample extraction, cleanup and detection of trace compounds using advanced instrumentation, especially triple quad GCMSMS, LCMSMS or LC-HRMS.
  4. Prior experiences in implementing ISO/IEC 17025:2017 laboratory quality system is beneficial.
  5. Possession of skills in data analytics is an advantage.
