XCL World Academy is seeking to appoint a Science Lab Technician (Secondary Years). This is a full-time 2-year contract position starting from 1 August 2025.
The Secondary Years Science Lab Technician works directly with students in support of the instructional program and assists other key stakeholders, such as teachers as assigned.
Main Responsibilities
- To maintain laboratory equipment and materials in proper working order and maintain a clean work area in the laboratory rooms and chemical room.
- To oversee safety, handling, and disposing of hazardous chemicals as required by the National Environment Agency and explosive precursors as required by the Singapore Police Force.
- Carry out risk assessments to ensure that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly.
- Support teachers with demonstrations of experiments to students and run trial experiments prior to classes.
- Assist students with research projects and provide support to faculty with experiments, administration, and coordination duties.
- Familiar and confident in using LabQuest, LabQuest Sensors and Probes, light microscope, stereo microscope, incubator, water bath, and other specialised Science laboratory materials and equipment.
- Follow and abide by Workplace Safety and Health guidelines from MOM; Good Practices for controlling health hazards (dealing and disposal of chemicals).
- Liaise with the Head of Science Department and Science teachers to discuss timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans.
- Attend Science and Math Department meetings.
- Prepare Purchase Orders (PO) for resources needed.
- Responsible for handling Petty Cash and liaising with the Science team on items needed to purchase for daily use and upcoming lab practicals.
- Prepare chemicals ahead of time before they are required for lab practical classes.
- Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced.
- Familiar with fire and emergency procedures.
- Ensure that lab glassware and equipment are properly cleaned and that chemicals and other materials used are appropriately disposed of and stored.
- Tidy and maintain all laboratories, ensuring that all equipment is rightly stored in the lab room and properly maintained after usage.
- Work closely with Science teachers and students to explain or demonstrate experiments or equipment, as well as helping teachers and supporting individual students on research projects.
- Follow and ensure strict safety procedures and safety checks; lock the chemicals storeroom at all times and allow access only to authorized personnel; no chemicals should be left in the laboratory after usage unless otherwise requested by Science teachers.
Person Specifications
- Bachelor's in Science/Engineering or other relevant qualification specific to the role.
- Minimum 2 years in a similar role, preferably in an international school setting.
- Proficient in Google and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Knowledgeable in handling and preparing chemicals, with excellent scientific, technical knowledge and working practices.
- Demonstrated track record of being a successful Science Lab Technician from an established international school.
- Understands and adapts to the diverse cultural backgrounds of our staff, students, and parents/guardians.
- Demonstrated understanding of the needs of international students.
- Goes beyond expectations in supporting students' ambitions and goals.
- Organized, proactive, and solution-focused.
- Has demonstrated the ability to work well in teams and is capable of creating positive relationships with all members of the school community.
