Job description

The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Associate on a 20-month contract at the Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs.

Project Title: Values-based Education in Teacher Education Programmes: A Comparative Study [SRF 13/24 LEL]

Project Introduction: The proposed study will investigate how values-based teacher education programmes are implemented in four countries: namely Singapore, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States of America (USA). The selection of two countries from the East and two from the West is intentional in order to compare the different philosophies and practices. These countries have also been selected for their housing of a dedicated research centre for values/citizenship/character education.

Requirements:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with local social and/or public policy
  • Experience in public service writing academic/policy papers
  • Familiar with local educational research
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong mixed methods (quantitative/qualitative) research skills

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature reviews on values-based education and teacher professional development in the selected countries.
  • Assist in qualitative data collection, including interviews with teacher educators and field experts.
  • Analyze data from the study’s meta-synthesis of relevant literature and interview findings.
  • Prepare research reports, summaries, and presentations.
  • Coordinate project-related communication and administrative tasks.
  • Ensure timely deliverables of the project.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

Written Tasks: Please submit the following writing tasks along with your application:

  1. Topic: How does the research literature define values-based education (VbE) in teacher education programmes? What are the key trends observed?
  2. Task 1: Provide a 2 page summary (not exceeding 3 pages) of the main trends that emerge from the review of the literature.
  3. Task 2: Provide a summary of about 50 -100 words for 5 key references and studies linked to the assigned topic, and be sure to cite up-to-date studies. Please present it in a table format with the following:
  • Authors
  • Title
  • Type of paper
  • Country of Origin
  • Paradigms discussed
  • Objectives of the study
  • Summary of Findings
  • Recommendations
