Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Assistant in the Human Potential Translational Research Programme (HPTRP), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The HPTRP brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with an interest to maximise human potential. In HPTRP, focusing only on human studies, we adopt a holistic perspective that considers human potential as an integrative measure of health, productivity, performance, human capital and overall well-being over the lifespan, in our environment. Appointments will be made on a one-year contract, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant (RA) will be involved in establishing Singapore’s heat health history and heritage. The RA will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator(s) to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project. The RA’s principal role will be to recruit participants, conduct archival research and oral history interviews, participate in ethnographic fieldwork, data entry and analysis, interview transcription and drafting of publications and reports.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will assist in historical research and analysis (i.e. archival research, oral history interviews, data collection and organisation etc.), liaise with relevant personnel and will be accountable to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Assistant will:

• Support the conduct of archival research and oral history interviews;
• Provide administrative support to the project, such as in the recruitment of participants and data collection;
• Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct and record-keeping in accordance with policies and procedures;
• Maintain regular communication with other members of the research team;
• Perform literature review, data analysis and drafting of reports and publications;
• Work at different study sites, depending on the needs; and
• Work beyond routine work hours due to the nature of research.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

• Have a good Bachelor’s degree, preferably in history, anthropology, geography or closely-related humanities or social science disciplines;
• Preferably have an interest in the history of medicine or science and technology studies (STS) and/or a second major or degree in the biomedical sciences (e.g. biology, physiology, anatomy, exercise science etc.) or traditional Chinese medicine.
• Have undertaken rigorous historical research, preferably at the honours’ level;
• Be proficient in Chinese for research purposes (e.g. able to read and analyze Chinese primary and secondary sources, such as newspaper articles, books, journal articles etc.)
• Be able to work independently and in a team;
• Have an investigative nature and be detail-oriented;
• Preferably have some experience in conducting oral history interviews.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
