Nurse Educator

Job Responsibilities

1. Assesses, identifies, implements, coordinates, and evaluates departmental nursing staff's continuing education, training, and development plans to ensure provision of competent and quality patient care.
2. Responsible for nursing staff induction, clinical education/training, in-service education, personal, and professional growth.
3. Serves as a resource person in education/nursing training matters and clinical issues to provide a high-quality standard of care.
4. Plans and provides direct clinical supervision for nursing students and junior staff.
5. Facilitates the clinical learning environment of nursing students to improve their learning experiences.
6. Monitors and evaluates nursing students' feedback; develops action plans collaboratively with ward nursing colleagues to improve nursing students' learning experiences.
7. Collaborates with educational institutions to ensure nursing students' application of learning into practice, e.g., hand hygiene compliance.
8. Utilizes effective teaching strategies to develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning among nursing students, newly recruited nurses, and nursing staff.
9. Coaches preceptors and clinical instructors on their role effectiveness and assessment of nursing trainees and junior nurses' performance, e.g., formative and summative assessment, learning action plans.
10. Conducts nursing staff orientation, training, and continuing education programs to maintain a level of competency.
11. Conducts learning needs analysis to identify learning gaps and training needs of nursing staff at ward/cluster level.
12. Provides career counseling/coaching for all levels of nursing staff's professional development.
13. Responsible to maintain and perform the following core competencies competently:
14. Clinical teaching/supervision - Structured teaching - Assessment of trainees and nurses' clinical performance [formative & summative].
15. Reviews and revises existing curriculum following constructive recommendations on training/practice issues in order to meet the current educational needs of the hospital.
16. Participates in the implementation and development of e-learning resources.
17. Mentors and inducts potential acting nurse clinician for the education track.
18. Works collaboratively with ward/unit/cluster Nursing Officers and Senior Nursing Officers to [i] maintain clinical standards; [ii] conduct total performance management (includes career coaching and staff development) and [iii] assume joint managerial responsibilities, e.g., patients and/or families feedback, eHOR etc.

Secondary Responsibilities

1. Maintains clinical competency by seeking educational opportunities to maintain current knowledge and acquire new knowledge related to nursing practice.
2. Collaborates with ward/cluster nursing leaders in nursing research initiatives/evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.
3. Participates in educational audit/quality improvement projects/risk management.
4. Participates in nursing workgroup/committee at cluster/hospital level.
5. Takes on additional responsibilities or tasks as assigned by the Senior Nurse Educator, Deputy/Assistant Director (Nursing), and Chief Nurse.

Requirements

1. Registered Nurse with at least 9 years of post-registration clinical experience, of which a minimum of one (1) year experience in clinical teaching/professional development and continuing education at an acute hospital setting, and 2 years as Assistant Nurse Clinician.
2. Diploma in Nursing with relevant post-basic advanced certification and Degree in Nursing from a recognized training institution as approved by the Singapore Nursing Board. A teaching qualification would be an advantage. Interest in teaching nursing training and development activities.
3. Good interpersonal and communication skills.
4. Good computer skills and proficient in MS Office applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
