The Role

Netflix seeks a seasoned and intellectually-curious music business affairs executive to join our team based in Singapore. This role will provide music business affairs support for our Content, Marketing, and PR teams covering Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Chinese-language projects. This position will be based in our Singapore office, with periodic international travel.

The role will oversee, manage, and scale the music clearance workflow for film and series content and for marketing and PR campaigns, from project conceptualization to launch. Responsibilities include clearing music tracks with multiple rights holders, from quote through license review/drafting/negotiation to signature. In addition, the role will advise on a wide range of music matters, including contracting composers and other music talent (whether for original score or songs) and overseeing music requirements and deliverables for film and series content (e.g., cue sheets, CMO requirements), while aligning with the strategic goals of the company.

Requirements

This person must have experience in music clearance/licensing or music legal. They must have in-depth knowledge of music copyright and experience structuring, negotiating, and drafting master use and synchronization rights license agreements; library license agreements; composer, songwriter, and performer agreements; music director, music supervisor, and music producer agreements; and record label and music publishing waivers; in each case, with the ability to negotiate such deals from commercial terms to drafting/negotiating the contract through to signature and implementation. They must have deep relationships in the Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and/or Chinese-language music industry, including with record labels, music publishers, music libraries, production agencies, artists, songwriters, and managers.

Experience in the film or series industry and knowledge of the film/series production and distribution process (e.g., development to pre-production to physical production to post-production, cue sheets, and marketing) is preferred but not necessary.

The ideal candidate is excited and inspired by Netflix culture and welcomes the opportunity to be part of an entrepreneurial, global organization. They are comfortable working proactively, collaborating and maintaining alignment with other teams (both cross functionally and cross regionally within the music team), and making decisions that have both business and legal impact. This is a demanding, fast-paced role that requires curiosity and significant initiative.

The Successful Candidate Will Also Possess The Following

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to work on a high volume of assignments under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment and to prioritize accordingly
  • Ability to think practically and be solution-oriented
  • Adaptable negotiation style
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (candor, honesty, and tact), with the ability to communicate complex music rights concepts quickly and simply
  • Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside their area of expertise
  • Openness to feedback

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Advise and manage production companies on music rights and licensing (or clear music directly, as necessary) for content/marketing/PR usage
  • Flag potential music clearance concerns during project development phase
  • Research music ownership and obtain quotes from record labels and publishers
  • Draft, review, and negotiate multi-territorial commercial music license contracts, including music library deals and blanket deals
  • Onboard and manage external music supervisors, external music legal counsel, and other external music clearance personnel
  • Execute custom music projects with artists and producers
  • Manage and review music legal delivery and rights management workflows, including tracking of music license terms and restrictions and music cue sheets
  • Advise on and monitor music budgets, and provide estimates when needed, for film, series, and marketing/PR projects
