About our group:

Material Science Lab is part of the Research and Development facilities located in Shugart building to support all HDD and some non-HDD material related selection, qualification, failure analysis, etc. The function of the lab includes performing components level material, pro-active qualification for new products and performing drive failure analysis to improve the drives quality and robustness. We work closely with multiple cross-sties, cross functional team regularly.

About the role - you will:

  1. Operate and maintain equipment such as Nano-FTIR (nanoscale Fourier Transform Infrared) for advanced material characterization and analysis of nanoscale material properties in HDDs to investigate surface chemistry, oxidation, contamination and other critical properties.
  2. Be responsible for developing (e.g. organic) models and experiments for hard disc drive performance to understand the interactions within the HDD.
  3. Evaluate material properties and structural integrity of HDD components based on modeling results.
  4. Develop solutions to technical problems through the application of materials science and engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
  5. Work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrate good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

This job is career-oriented, journey-level position.

About you:

  1. Strong understanding of electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and material science.
  2. Effective communication and good interpersonal skills to work within and with other related departments in Seagate or suppliers.
  3. Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple priorities.
  4. Strong team player, collaborative approach, and resourceful.
  5. Meticulous personality, self-motivated and able to work independently.

Your experience includes:

Job requires at least a degree (Bachelor) in Physics, Engineering or Material Science field. Preferable with relevant hands-on experience with spectroscopic techniques such as Nano-FTIR (i.e., operation, troubleshooting & analysis).

Location:

The Shugart site (named after Seagate’s founder, Al Shugart) is a research and design center. Easily accessible from the One-North MRT Station, many employees choose to take mass transportation to work. Being a purpose-built building, The Shugart has excellent employee recreational facilities.
