Privacy Counsel

About the Role:

The Privacy Counsel is part of our global privacy function and this role will be based in Singapore. The lawyer in this role will assist with our global privacy function initiatives such as privacy awareness, accountability, and compliance, and will also directly support the business on compliance with current and developing rules and regulations involving privacy and data protection. The position will report to the Dow Jones Chief Privacy Officer based in NYC, U.S. and will receive guidance from a senior lawyer in the APAC region.

You Will:

1. Foster a culture of data protection within the organization and help to develop, implement and/or maintain essential elements of Dow Jones’s privacy program, such as data protection impact assessments (DPIAs), data protection by design and by default, records of processing activities, privacy playbooks, the data subjects’ rights response process, privacy awareness training, notification and communication of data breaches;
2. Inform, advise and issue recommendations to the Company and business stakeholders regarding compliance with applicable privacy and data protection laws and regulations, regulatory requirements, and relevant Company policies and guidelines;
3. Work closely with internal stakeholders in the review of new products, services and initiatives, often involving novel technologies, to ensure compliance with data protection laws. Confirm that sound protocols are in place to mitigate privacy risks unique to such technologies;
4. Be responsible for advising and providing support on privacy-related topics for the Company’s various products and services and working alongside product, marketing and other business teams.
5. Identify and manage risks related to data protection, and escalate data protection risks and issues as needed;
6. Maintain updated knowledge of legal and regulatory developments that are relevant to the business, including in direct marketing and online privacy;
7. Advise on and negotiate privacy and data protection terms in commercial contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements and data transfer agreements;
8. Attend regular/ongoing privacy training; provide ad hoc privacy training to internal stakeholders.

You Have:

1. A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), Juris Doctor, or equivalent degree from a reputable university, and are qualified to practice as a lawyer in Singapore or other Commonwealth jurisdictions.
2. Ideally, possess at least 5+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal team, and at least 3 years of experience in a data privacy / data protection function;
3. Experience navigating or operating within global data protection laws and requirements, including extensive knowledge of the details and practical application of international data protection legislation, including throughout the APAC region;
4. Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently, under pressure, and can maintain company-wide standards;
5. Experience implementing data protection policies, procedures, and training materials, and promoting a culture of data protection compliance across business functions;
6. A team player with great stakeholder management skills who can effectively collaborate and build relationships with lawyers and business clients throughout the organization. You have demonstrated experience communicating effectively with the highest levels of management within the organization and external stakeholders to provide advice regarding data protection questions, risks, contract terms, and issues;
7. Ability to simultaneously manage workloads, multiple demands and shifting priorities within a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment;
8. Ability to work with stakeholders from varying disciplines and geographic backgrounds;
9. Self-awareness and confidence to recognize knowledge gaps and seek to fill them from reliable sources;
10. Curiosity to learn about emerging privacy laws, new technologies and areas of risk;
11. Strong negotiation skills and strong commercial awareness and analytical skills, and ability to develop innovative and pragmatic approaches to privacy and security issues in support of business initiatives;
12. Experience in the media and/or compliance industry, and with marketing operations, preferred;
13. Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and follow-up skills;
14. Possess integrity, professional ethics, and sound judgement in managing risks.

Preferred Qualifications

1. CIPP (Certified Information Privacy Professional) preferred.
2. A second language is advantageous but not required.
3. Familiarity in technical privacy review preferred.

Work Location

This position is based in Singapore, with the potential for regional travel.
