Job Description:

We are seeking a Data Scientist with a strong focus on rainfall estimation algorithms and nowcasting models. While this is a leadership role, the primary requirement is expertise in developing rainfall estimation models using X-band weather radar and commercial microwave link data, as well as rainfall nowcasting models. These skills are as important as general data science expertise.

The Data Scientist will design and implement state-of-the-art rainfall estimation and nowcasting methodologies, leveraging both physics-based and machine learning approaches. They will collaborate with executives and unit heads to deploy these solutions operationally, ensuring accuracy and effectiveness.

Additionally, the Data Scientist will coordinate cross-functional analytic initiatives and enhance big data capabilities within the company.

Education:

  • PhD or MSc degree in Hydro-Meteorology, Water Resources Management, Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Statistics, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Experience & Technical Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a data science role, with a strong emphasis on rainfall estimation and nowcasting model development.
  • Proven expertise in developing rainfall estimation algorithms using X-band weather radar and commercial microwave link data.
  • Extensive experience in rainfall nowcasting, applying advanced modeling techniques for short-term precipitation predictions.
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience in deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.
  • Familiarity with SQL, Perl, Java, or VB for rapid prototyping is preferred.
  • Experience with weather-related remote sensing technologies, including:
    • Weather radars (S-, C-, or X-band)
    • Satellite-based sensing (active and passive)
    • Commercial microwave links for rainfall estimation
  • Strong track record of leading data analytics teams and delivering advanced quantitative analyses and statistical modeling to improve operational capabilities.

Soft Skills & Leadership Abilities:

  • Project Management: Ability to lead data specialists and complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Communication: Strong ability to convey technical insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Experience working with software development teams to integrate data capabilities.
  • Problem-Solving: Strategic thinker with innovative solutions for meteorological challenges.
  • Adaptability: Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively under pressure.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A team builder who fosters a collaborative and high-performance environment.
  • Stakeholder Management: Ability to build trust with junior team members and senior executives.

This role is ideal for candidates with deep expertise in rainfall estimation and nowcasting who wish to lead impactful data science initiatives in weather analytics. If you have technical skills in these areas and a passion for environmental innovation, we encourage you to apply.
