Job description

Role Overview:

The Commercial Director is responsible for developing and executing the ship management company's commercial strategy. This includes driving business growth, fostering client relationships, and ensuring the company remains competitive in the maritime industry. The role demands a strategic thinker with strong leadership, negotiation, and financial acumen to optimize revenue streams and maintain operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Development & Strategy:

  • Develop and implement the company’s commercial strategy in alignment with business goals.
  • Identify new business opportunities, including fleet expansion, new markets, and client acquisition.
  • Conduct market analysis and stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and competitor activities.
  • Build partnerships with shipowners, charterers, and key stakeholders to enhance the company’s market presence.
  • Oversee contract negotiations for ship management agreements and ensure favorable terms for the company.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for key accounts, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Address client concerns and provide tailored solutions to meet their operational needs.
  • Regularly engage with customers to identify business opportunities and enhance service offerings.

Revenue & Financial Management:

  • Oversee revenue generation, pricing strategies, and cost management to achieve financial targets.
  • Develop annual budgets and forecasts, ensuring profitability and sustainable growth.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial reports to assess commercial performance.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to optimize cash flow and ensure financial stability.

Operational & Contractual Management:

  • Ensure that all commercial agreements comply with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with the technical and operations teams to align commercial and operational objectives.
  • Oversee dispute resolution related to contracts, insurance, and claims management.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service quality and operational efficiency.

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor the commercial team, fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for team members, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to enhance team capabilities.
  • Promote collaboration across departments to support company-wide success.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial roles within the shipping or maritime industry.
  • Proven track record in business development, contract negotiation, and revenue management.
  • Strong knowledge of ship management operations, commercial shipping, and industry regulations.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and drive business growth in a competitive environment.
  • Fluency in Chinese and English is required.
